You might think the best way to play this trend is to focus on the largest network infrastructure players, but some smaller companies can be very rewarding for investors.<\/p>\n<p> Jamie Cuellar, who co-manages the Buffalo Small Cap Fund<br \/>\n        BUFSX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206708770\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.53%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       named five companies he expects to benefit from \u201cthe increased demand for communications bandwidth,\u201d including 5G, over the next several years. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The 5G rollout has been long touted, but the new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, which will move data at 100 times the speed of current 4G networks, is only available within some cities. However, Apple Inc.\u2019s<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.40%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0rollout of two 5G-enabled iPhones phones this week, with starting prices unchanged from last year\u2019s iPhones, underlines how quickly demand for the faster networks will grow.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five small-cap companies that Cuellar believes are primed to take advantages of \u201ca good multiyear spending environment\u201d for 5G network construction, sorted alphabetically. Only two of the five are expected to show higher sales for all of 2020, while three achieved double-digit increases last year. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s more about the five, followed by a summary of the opinions offered by Wall Street analysts (also known as the sell side).<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Adtran\"><\/span>Adtran<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>During an interview, Cuellar called Adtran Inc.<br \/>\n        ADTN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207566273\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.98%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0\u201cthe best way to play share gains from Huawei in Europe, if they happen.\u201d Huawei Technologies has been under tremendous pressure from the Trump administration as well as in many other countries over network security concerns and the company\u2019s links to the Chinese government. <\/p>\n<p>Cuellar called Adtran \u201ca 2021 story,\u201d because he expects network spending to \u201cramp\u201d among the company\u2019s largest customers, including BT Group PLC<br \/>\n        BT.A,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209006687\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.76%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Deutsche Telekom AG<br \/>\n        DTE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205973137\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.17%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        DTEGY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207225900\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.36%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0and Orange<br \/>\n        ORAN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203380818\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.94%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n       <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Calix\"><\/span>Calix<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Calix Inc.<br \/>\n        CALX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206786772\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.19%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0can benefit from increased spending among smaller, regional U.S. broadband service providers, Cuellar said. The company has added software services in recent years, and revenue from systems is growing much more quickly than hardware sales. That shift not only means better profit margins but an expected \u201cmultiple expansion\u201d for the stock, he said. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ciena\"><\/span>Ciena<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Ciena Corp.<br \/>\n        CIEN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208745450\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.71%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0operates optical networks, and Cuellar believes the company is another beneficiary of a global move away from Huawei. <\/p>\n<p>The stock plunged 24% on Sept. 3, after CEO Gary Smith warned during the company\u2019s earnings call that a decline in customers\u2019 spending brought about by the coronavirus crisis would hurt revenue for \u201cthe next few quarters,\u201d and the price hasn\u2019t recovered. But Smith added that demand for broadband access was increasing at an annual pace of 25% to 30%, meaning Ciena\u2019s customers would eventually be forced to increase spending.<\/p>\n<p>Cuellar said the shares are \u201cpretty attractive\u201d after the drop. He described Ciena\u2019s service offerings as \u201cpretty broad\u201d and said the company\u2019s technology was \u201cdominant\u201d in the quality of its engineering relative to its peers. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Inphi\"><\/span>Inphi<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Inphi Corp.<br \/>\n        IPHI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/208445412\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.60%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0provides components for companies that make network equipment for telecommunications carriers and data center operators. Cuellar called it \u201ca higher-growth name that has the best product cycle story in the space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inphi has the highest forward price-to-earnings ratio on the list, but in this market, investors are clearly placing a premium on sales growth in the high double-digits. Cuellar said Inphi\u2019s management expects 5G spending by its customers to \u201cramp hard\u201d in 2022.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lumentum\"><\/span>Lumentum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Lumentum Holdings Inc.<br \/>\n        LITE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/204419752\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.97%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n      \u00a0sells optical and 3-D components globally, including laser sensors used in iPhones.
