“#Rays clip Astros in Game<\/a> 7 to reach World Series<\/a> for second time<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n OK, Yankees fans, here\u2019s the good news<\/a>: the Astros aren\u2019t going back to the World Series.<\/p>\n

The bad news? <\/p>\n

The Yankees\u2019 newest rivals, the Rays, are headed there instead \u2014 and the Yankees remain the only team to have blown a three-game series lead in the playoffs.<\/p>\n

Tampa Bay beat Houston, 4-2, in Game 7 of the ALCS on Saturday night at Petco Park in San Diego to advance to the World Series for the second time in franchise history. They\u2019ll face the winner of Sunday\u2019s NLCS Game 7 between the Dodgers and Braves.<\/p>\n

The Rays\u2019 victory also prevented the Astros having a chance to win a title the same year they were found by MLB to have used an illegal sign-stealing scheme on their way to the 2017 World Series championship.<\/p>\n

Houston was just the second team to have forced a Game 7 after dropping the first three games of a playoff series, joining the 2004 Red Sox. Unlike Boston, though, the Astros couldn\u2019t finish the job.<\/p>\n

Before the game, Tampa Bay\u2019s Kevin Kiermaier said the team was aware of that history thanks to an ESPN documentary \u2014 and didn\u2019t want to be a part of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great documentary,\u2019\u2019 Kiermaier said. \u201cWe watched it through this year on plane rides. It was a heck of a documentary. But we control our own destiny. We control what goes on out there today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ironically, it was a key member of that team\u2019s pitching staff, Charlie Morton, who shut the Astros down on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Now with the Rays, Morton blanked his former team for 5 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings.<\/p>\n

Tampa Bay hit a pair of homers off Houston starter Lance McCullers Jr. to provide enough offense. The biggest blow, not surprisingly, came from October star Randy Arozarena, who gave the Rays a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.<\/p>\n

Mike Zunino took McCullers deep with one out in the second to make it 3-0. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Morton was dominant.<\/p>\n

He came into the game having not allowed more than an earned run in any of his previous four postseason starts \u2014 each lasting five innings. <\/p>\n

On Saturday, the right-hander gave up a two-out single to Michael Brantley in the top of the first and then retired 14 straight.<\/p>\n

The Astros threatened in the top of the sixth, as Morton was pulled with two on and two out, having thrown just 66 pitches.<\/p>\n

He was replaced by Nick Anderson in a similar move to the one made by Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash in Game 6, when he took Blake Snell out in the fifth and went to Diego Castillo. In Game 6, it backfired, as Castillo struggled and let the game slip away.<\/p>\n

This time, it worked, as Brantley, representing the tying run, grounded to second to keep it a three-run game.<\/p>\n

The Rays added to their lead in the bottom of the inning when Zunino\u2019s sacrifice fly drove in Ji-Man Choi to make it 4-0.<\/p>\n

The Astros had another chance to cut into the lead in the seventh after consecutive one-out singles by Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker, but Yuli Gurriel\u2019s nightmarish postseason continued when he hit into an inning-ending double play.<\/p>\n

They broke through in the eighth, loading the bases with two out. Carlos Correa delivered a two-run single off Pete Fairbanks to cut Tampa Bay\u2019s lead to 4-2, but Alex Bregman struck out to end the inning.<\/p>\n

Fairbanks set the Astros down in the ninth to save it.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
