Last week, word broke that\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em><\/strong> had already been renewed for season 4, and that the new season would start production next month. This raises one big question: how? As we all know, the coronavirus \u2013 which is still very much around, with cases starting to spike again in the United States \u2013 has made production on TV and movies<\/a> somewhat tricky right now. But\u00a0Discovery<\/em> has an ace up their sleeve: home-based post-production. At least, that\u2019s what was used to finish the recently-premiered season 3. Who knows what the future holds?<\/p>\n

A new piece in\u00a0Indiewire<\/a> details how\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery\u00a0<\/em>season 3 \u2013 which just premiered on CBS All Access \u2013 dealt with post-production work at home. \u201cOur editors, miraculously and heroically, took their editing bays into their living rooms,\u201d producer Alex Kurtzman<\/strong> said. \u201cAnd we cut the entire season, in collaboration, just the way I\u2019m talking to you right now. We also scored the entire season, mixed the entire season, color timed the entire season, all from this laptop [over which this Zoom interview occurred].\u201d For the music, series composer Jeff Russo<\/strong> \u201csent microphones to each of the orchestra members\u2019 homes so that they could record their individual parts and they could all be mixed together later on, as if playing in unison.\u201d
\nAnd it wasn\u2019t just the behind-the-scenes crew that worked from home, either. When certain VFX shots needed actors to app<\/a>ear, those actors were sent \u201cmotion-capture equipment to finish elements of their performance at home.\u201d\u00a0Kurtzman explained: \u201cIt\u2019s an actual actor at their home motion-capture studio, which then gets rendered in the computer as a living thing. It\u2019s a real person\u2026Each of our actors have been scanned, so we can actually impose their faces on a body, which is quite something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Post-production work on season 3 is still ongoing. But now, Kurtzman and company are gearing up to start shooting season 4.\u00a0 As the IndieWire story reports, the cast \u201crecently travel<\/a>ed to Toronto to begin their quarantine before production starts, with full COVID safety protocols in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

And now,\u00a0Star Trek:<\/em>\u00a0Discovery<\/em> can also take solace in knowing they have workarounds for at-home post-production should the show call for it.\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em> stars\u00a0Sonequa Martin-Green<\/strong>\u00a0stars as Michael Burnham, a female science<\/a> specialist on the Discovery, leading a cast that includes\u00a0Doug Jones<\/strong>,\u00a0Shazad Latif<\/strong>,\u00a0Anthony Rapp<\/strong>,\u00a0Mary Wiseman<\/strong>, and\u00a0Wilson Cruz<\/strong>. It\u2019s now airing on CBS All Access, along with approximately 500 other\u00a0Star Trek<\/em> shows.<\/p>\n
