In 2016, Democratic voters in rural Minnesota\u2019s Iron Range mining community shifted allegiances to Donald Trump, because he spoke out about free trade\u2019s role in \u201cthe region\u2019s fading prosperity,\u201d reports The Guardian\u2019s Chris McGreal<\/a>. This time around, six mayors from the region signed a joint letter endorsing the president, because they \u201cno longer regarded the [Democratic Party] as advocating for workers.\u201d Trump\u2019s tariffs on China\u2019s steel and tax cuts, meanwhile, have \u201cinjected new life into the industry.\u201d Now, miners \u201cfeel even more alienated from their former party,\u201d amid the rise of \u201ca new breed of Democratic politicians who talk of \u2018social<\/a>ism\u2019 and scrapp<\/a>ing immigration enforcement.\u201d As the president of the local United Steelworkers union branch pointed out, while Joe Biden may not be opposed to mining, \u201cthere is a strong perception in the region that the Democrats as a whole are, and that has a big impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prosecutor: The Real Disinformation Hoax<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf the stakes were not high, it would be a laugh-riot to listen to people who relied on the Steele dossier in an Intelligence Community assessment\u201d calling The Post\u2019s reporting on Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop \u201ca \u2018Russian disinformation\u2019 hoax,\u201d snarks Andrew C. McCarthy at The Hill<\/a>. \u201cMost alarming\u201d about how it\u2019s been \u201csloughed off by Biden supporters and their media (including social-media) allies has been the resistance \u2014 no pun intended \u2014 to analyzing the substance of the e-mails and photos themselves.\u201d The \u201cknee-jerk allegations\u201d of Russian disinformation and hacking aren\u2019t \u201cdispositive on the matter of authenticity,\u201d says the former federal prosecutor. And it\u2019s especially telling that \u201cneither Hunter Biden nor the Biden campaign has claimed the materials are fabricated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: This Is No Time To Rename Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reason\u2019s Robby Soave blasts San Francisco<\/a> school officials, who \u201care hard at work \u2014 not coming up with a plan to quickly reopen the schools, but to rename as many as 44 of them.\u201d They\u2019ve asked folks to brainstorm new names to replace those of \u201cproblematic\u201d historical figures, such as Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and even Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) \u2014 prompting Democratic Mayor London Breed to issue \u201ca strongly worded rebuke\u201d: \u201cIn the midst of this once in a century [pandemic] challenge, to hear that the district is focusing energy and resources on renaming schools \u2014 schools that they haven\u2019t even opened\u2014 is offensive.\u201d Soave is relieved, but only slightly: \u201cAt least one person in a position of authority in San Francisco has not completely lost her mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tech beat: Twitter Censors Science<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

After a week of \u201capparently politically motivated censorship,\u201d Twitter blocked tweets about \u201cthe efficacy of masks\u201d from Scott Atlas, a top White House scientist, sighs The Federalist\u2019s David Marcus<\/a>. The tweet in question cited World Health Organization reports and other credible evidence, but \u201csome 20-something with his pronouns in his Twitter bio just pushed a button and erased scientifically accurate information.\u201d Masks are \u201ca contentious political argument in the midst of the 2020 presidential election,\u201d and Twitter is once again proving that \u201cnot only does it have an editorial agenda, it has a political one.\u201d Twitter is protected as a neutral platform, but its agenda is now \u201cas obvious as a punch in the mouth, which is exactly what Congress needs to give it,\u201d says Marcus. \u201cFree speech is as central to the American experiment as any concept is, and as foreign to Twitter as could be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclasts: \u2018Anti-Fascists\u2019 Silent on Beheading<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnti-fascists are incredibly quiet about the fascist in France who cut off a man\u2019s head because he displayed some cartoons in a classroom,\u201d seethes Spiked Online\u2019s Brendan O\u2019Neill<\/a>. That would be the Islamist extremist who murdered \u201cschoolteacher Samuel Paty for the supposed crime of showing caricatures of Muhammad to his pupils during a classroom discussion about freedom of speech. And yet the self-styled anti-fascists of the European and American left have said barely a word. . . . Their craven, cowardly silence is as revealing as it is depressing.\u201d<\/p>\n
