Members gain useful insights in story form<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>#Forget &#8216;users&#8217; and focus on the 7 steps to make organizations &#8216;memberful&#8217;<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                                <span>With the birth of the world wide web came digital design and the introduction of the phrase \u201cuser experience.\u201d It would mean many things to many people but broadly it\u2019s used to describe what someone learns, sees, and feels when interacting with web content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As a digital designer, I have become obsessed with this user experience: how individuals connect with organizations online, but also in the real world, and how the nature of this experience \u2014 this relationship \u2014 is often key to an organization\u2019s sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The relationship between you and your customers acquires real depth in the business model of memberships, where the user doesn\u2019t only value the product, but also believes in the cause and supports it in ways beyond giving money. They connect individuals\u2019 passions to a shared larger purpose, getting the ratio right between the person and the group.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emgollie\"><i>Emily Goligoski<\/i><\/a><i><span>, former research director at the Membership Puzzle Project, and senior director for audience research at The Atlantic.<\/span><\/i>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>If you embrace the success of the membership model you can follow the route of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> companies like <\/span><i><span>The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span> or startups like ad-free journalism platform <\/span><i><span>The Correspondent<\/span><\/i><span> to build a loyal base of engaged members that contribute time, network, and knowledge in pursuit of your shared purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Designing great user experiences has always been at the heart of my work and Momkai\u2019s, but the word \u201cuser\u201d \u2014 reminding me of Silicon Valley\u2019s darker side, and putting growth above all else \u2014 has come to feel increasingly in<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate for what I want to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the word \u201cmember\u201d feels right for the type of projects we support. The Membership Puzzle Project says being a member is a type of \u201csocial contract\u201d where your relationship with an organization goes beyond the transactional.<\/p>\n<p><span>Sure, you might give money to that organization or cause, but you also stand behind its mission based on shared values, and become a part of the community that surrounds it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Therefore, members serve as a constant reminder for organizations to work according to the missions that they\u2019ve laid out. united the 1.2 million members that make up the Royal Dutch Football Association; empowered scientific communities throughout Europe with new initiatives for the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-019-03782-z#:~:text=The%20Embassy%20of%20Good%20Science%20is%20one%20such%20platform.,and%20articles%20explaining%20good%20practice.\"><span>Embassy of Good Science<\/span><\/a><span> and Imperial College London; Since members are your strongest supporters, they are willing to grant their attention to you, as long as you don\u2019t abuse it. As <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/305284349\"><span>Jay Rosen explains on The Daily Show<\/span><\/a><span>, this approach is the opposite of an attention-grabbing ethic. That means that in order to become memberful, you need to have a loyal following in the first place, no matter how big or small. This usually means repeat visitors, not <\/span><i><span>traffic<\/span><\/i><span> (as explained in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/membershipguide.org\/handbook\/getting-started-with-membership\/how-to-know-if-were-ready-for-membership\"><span>NYU\u2019s guide<\/span><\/a><span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Once you meet that first requirement, our experience tells us there are seven elements to a meaningful member experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Members_understand_your_mission\"><\/span><b>1. Members understand your mission<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Those interacting with your organization feel a strong sense of shared responsibility, common purpose, or common values. What does your organization stand for and believe in? How is this communicated? Are members able to clearly connect with your cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Members_receive_benefits_they_actually_want\"><\/span>\n<span>2. <\/span><b>Members receive benefits they actually want<\/b><br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Memberful initiatives clearly communicate what people receive in return for their \u201cgift,\u201d whether that gift is their money, time, or knowledge. If I give money, what do I get access to and how often? If I share knowledge, where does this live, who has access to it, and how can it be shared? If I spend time connecting with the community, who will I meet, what network will I build?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Members_see_people_at_the_center_of_your_organization\"><\/span>\n<span>3. <\/span><b>Members see people at the center of your organization<\/b><br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Your initiative has a human face. Can members clearly see the people behind the project?
