\n To quote the formidable Olivia Benson: Call a bus, because it looks like someone from the\u00a0\u201cSVU\u201d-verse may soon be dead.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, NBC announced that the newest \u201cLaw & Order\u201d\u00a0spinoff\u00a0\u201cOrganized Crime\u201d would air Thursdays at 10\/9c, directly following\u00a0\u201cSVU.\u201d (Go here to see the full Fall 2020 line-up.) The newest offshoot of Dick Wolf\u2019s long-running franchise was ordered to series<\/a> in March and features \u201cSVU\u201d alum Christopher Meloni reprising the character of Elliot Stabler.<\/p>\n

In addition to the show\u2019s timeslot, the Peacock net also offered up a tantalizing new detail in the series\u2019 official logline: App<\/a>arently, Stabler \u201creturns to the NYPD to battle organized crime after a devastating personal loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, we immedia<\/a>tely assembled in the squad room and started piecing together clues, trying to figure out to whom that loss may refer. There\u2019s a good chance it\u2019s either Stabler\u2019s wife, Kathy \u2014 from whom we now know Elliot is divorced \u2014 or one of his 13<\/del> five kids: Maureen, Kathleen, Dickie, Elizabeth or Eli.<\/p>\n

\u201cSVU\u201d had an abrupt Season 21 finale in April, after the COVID-19 outbreak shut down television production in New York City. As TVLine exclusively reported soon after, the plan was for Kathy and one of the Stabler children to show up in the planned (and now scrapped) finale. Showrunner Warren Leight later revealed that \u201cWe were going to see Kathy Stabler come back, very upset \u2014 her son has been rolled by a team of ne\u2019er-do-wells and may have been drugged.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Stabler\u2019s traumatic personal life, the logline hints that the spinoff will address widespread public protests of racist acts performed by police departments all over the United States. The synopsis reads: \u201cThe city and police department have changed dramatically in the decade he\u2019s been away, and he must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning.\u201d This jibes with what Leight said in a\u00a0Hollywood Reporter podcast: \u201cPresumably, our cops will still be trying to do the right thing but it\u2019s going to be harder for them and they\u2019re going to understand why it\u2019s hard for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The last part is even more cryptic: \u201cThroughout the series, we will follow Stabler\u2019s journey to find absolution and rebuild his life, while leading a new elite task force that is taking apart the city\u2019s most powerful criminal syndicates one by one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Absolution for his past, less-than-exemplary decorum as a police officer? For his role (imagined or otherwise) in the aforementioned \u201cdevastating personal loss?\u201d What\u2019s your guess?\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
