And neither was COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The 100-year-old Reed, who drove race cars up until a year ago, says he has more days ahead of him thanks to a life full of good judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never smoked,\u201d he says. \u201cI watched my diet. I always try to do the right things: You never hear me cussing \u2026 I don\u2019t get angry, I hold my temper down. I walk away and have a good relationship with everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the coronavirus did a number on the Norwalk, Conn., native.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember much of anything,\u201d says the retired MTA train operator of his battle with the illness. \u201cI\u2019ve been on Earth a long time, I\u2019ve never been like that. I didn\u2019t know where I was \u2014 you lose track of everything. My memory isn\u2019t as good as it was before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His biggest hope? At one point she was employed as a fire department dispatcher, then at a fish market until 95.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only reason she retired was because the fish market closed,\u201d says Gary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says to me, \u2018When this is all over, we have a dinner date, right?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stay_strong_and_independent\"><\/span><strong>Stay strong and independent\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15774402\"><img alt=\"Lilian Menendez\" data- data- height=\"993\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Lilian Menendez<\/span><span>Courtesy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>104-year-old Lilian Menendez credits her longevity with good genes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother was 98 and she didn\u2019t have a gray hair in her head \u2014 she was jet black,\u201d says Menendez, the eldest resident at Apex Rehab &#038; Healthcare in South Huntington, LI.<\/p>\n<p>Menendez adds that her mother, who raised six children alone in Manhattan, taught her to be strong \u2014 and made sure they were fortified to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother took very good care of us,\u201d says Menendez. \u201cWe ate a lot of rice and beans, and chicken. But on May 4, the \u201cfeisty and tenacious\u201d 103-year-old woke up and said, \u201cI\u2019m not sick!\u201d Once she was cleared of the virus a couple of weeks later, she celebrated with a cold beer, something Dave says she\u2019d often indulge in on a hot summer day.<\/p>\n<p>The family matriarch, who lives in a nursing home in Wilbraham, Mass., was the first person to contract the deadly virus in the facility and the first there to beat it.<\/p>\n<p>Dave tells The Post that it is her active nature that\u2019s propelled her through her century of life.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cShe\u2019s the most high-energy person I ever met,\u201d says Dave, 49, who lives in Easton, Mass. \u201cInto her 90s, I would go places with her and I could barely keep up.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An avid Red Sox fan, Jennie spent most of her time in her garden, according to her grandson, where she grew tomatoes, cucumbers and mushrooms. She also consistently weeded and mowed her lawn, and went out regularly to play Bingo and go shopping.
