\n Five years ago, the City Council \u2014 including a young Corey Johnson \u2014 pushed the de Blasio administration to hire more cops and voted virtually unanimously to expand the Police Department by 1,300 officers.<\/p>\n

That was then. Johnson, now the Council\u2019s Speaker, said Tuesday that 2015 vote was a mistake and he backs efforts to downsize the NYPD by $1 billion, including by transferring some of its functions to other city agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was wrong on those 1,300 officers. Even though I wasn\u2019t speaker at the time, I was a council member, but I was wrong,\u201d Johnson said at a forum hosted by the publication City & State. \u201cYou know, we need to re-envision what public safety looks like, what policing looks like, and the conversation has evolved very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the second time in recent days Johnson\u2019s issued a mea culpa on backing the budget deal between Mayor Bill de Blasio and then-Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, which included the new positions over Hizzoner\u2019s initial opposition.<\/p>\n

Other vocal NYPD critics voted for the budget, too, including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams (D-Brooklyn) and Councilman Donovan Richards (D-Queens), who chairs the public safety committee that watchdogs the police.<\/p>\n

The 2021 mayoral hopeful first publicly said he regretted backing the expansion during a highly contentious hearing with the NYPD brass last week over City Hall\u2019s handling of protests and looting following the police-custody killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve made mistakes. I had good intentions, I thought I was doing the right thing, but being defensive isn\u2019t helpful,\u201d Johnson said, in his prepared opening remarks for a virtual committee meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cVoting to hire 1,300 new cops instead of pushing for more investments in communities was wrong, increasing the PD\u2019s budget year after year was wrong without making those investments in communities in a meaningful way.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
