\n Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s threat to rein in the free-speech rights of the city\u2019s police unions is little more than \u201cbluster\u201d and is \u201clegally baseless,\u201d experts on the First Amendment said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mayor is not constitutionally allowed to control the content of anyone\u2019s speech unless it\u2019s likely to lead to imminent unlawful action,\u201d said George Freeman, executive director of the Media<\/a> Law Resource Center.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was more bluster than anything else,\u201d he said. \u201cHis threat seems totally empty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Manhattan civil rights lawyer Eric Sanders also dismissed de Blasio\u2019s threat, which the mayor made in response to unfounded assertions that three cops who were sickened by tainted milkshakes had been intentionally poisoned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat he is saying is legally baseless,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n

Sanders, an ex-NYPD cop, also said the unions had the \u201cabsolute right to express their personal opinions on behalf of their membership, irrespective of whether the mayor, the police department or the public likes what their statements are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll they are doing is reacting in an emotional way because of all of the things that are being done to the police officers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mayor has to cut them some slack already.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NYPD on Tuesday said it found \u201cno criminality\u201d behind the milkshakes from a lower Manhattan Shake Shack that sent three cops to the hospital on Monday night, prompting the Police Benevolent Association and the Detectives\u2019 Endowment Association to walk back comments claiming the cops had been targeted.<\/p>\n

De Blasio on Tuesday attacked the unions over their earlier statements, saying, \u201cthese union leaders don\u2019t want the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just want to sow division, and we have to figure out what the limits are on their right to do that,\u201d Hizzoner said during a news<\/a> conference at City Hall.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
