Astrophysicists believe that short-term bursts are the result of collisions of neutron stars, while long-term bursts are the result of a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl ki\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/fast-blue-optical-transients-fbots-a-new-type-of-cosmic-burst\/\">supernova<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>driven by the core collapse of a massive star into a black hole. The video below shows a look at the potential dangers to Earth of a gamma ray burst.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"hu hv hw hx hy hz\">\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"6d46\" class=\"gy gz eo ep b ha it hb hc hd iu he hf hg iv hh hi hj iw hk hl hm ix hn ho hq eh fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Apep (otherwise known as 2XMM J160050.7\u2013514245) is named in honor of the Egyptian god of chaos, and rightfully so. A gamma ray burst like the one expected from the explosion of Apep could result in a mass extinction on Earth, even from far across the galaxy \u2014 provided the discharge from the eruption were aimed in our direction.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a449\" class=\"gy gz eo ep b ha it hb hc hd iu he hf hg iv hh hi hj iw hk hl hm ix hn ho hq eh fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Such an event could result in the rapid depletion of ozone from our atmosphere, and increased acid rain across the planet. Studies suggest the Ordovician\u2013Silurian<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl ki\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/KiTwFYlzE6Y\">extinction<\/a>, the second-largest loss of life in the history of Earth, may have been the result of such a gamma ray burst.<\/p>\n<p id=\"df94\" class=\"gy gz eo ep b ha it hb hc hd iu he hf hg iv hh hi hj iw hk hl hm ix hn ho hq eh fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWater would protect marine organisms from the heat of a GRB, but not from its other effects\u2026 Its gamma-rays would convert some nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere into nitrogen dioxide, the brownish gas present in urban smog. Nitrogen dioxide would filter out sunlight, turning the skies dark. The cooling effect could trigger an ice age,\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl ki\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2003\/030922\/full\/news030922-7.html\">Nature<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>reported in 2003.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8d17\" class=\"gy gz eo ep b ha it hb hc hd iu he hf hg iv hh hi hj iw hk hl hm ix hn ho hq eh fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Fortunately for us, when this system erupts, the energy will be released well away from<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cl ki\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/24-planets-that-may-be-more-habitable-than-earth-900068802301?source=false---------3\">Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6459\" class=\"gy gz eo ep b ha it hb hc hd iu he hf hg iv hh hi hj iw hk hl hm ix hn ho hq eh fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Due to the narrow cone of energy released by gamma ray bursts, we only see a small fraction of these events. Consequently, many more cosmic ray bursts must be h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening than just the small fraction seen by astronomers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"de0d\" class=\"gy gz eo ep b ha it hb hc hd iu he hf hg iv hh hi hj iw hk hl hm ix hn ho hq eh fl\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">While we see, roughly, one gamma ray burst per day taking place in a distant galaxy, the actual number is likely closer to 500 each day.
