\n Tech beat: Social Media Is State Media<\/strong><\/p>\n

The left is attacking New York Post reporting that exposes Hunter Biden\u2019s \u201cinfluence-peddling\u201d as Russian disinformation, but \u201cthe funny thing about kompromat \u2014 a Russian term for compromising information \u2014 is that it is often true,\u201d quips Jonathan Turley at The Hill<\/a>. \u201cHunter Biden has yet to deny these were his laptop, his e-mails, his images.\u201d Twitter\u2019s suppression of the story is \u201can outrageous example of open censorship and bias\u201d and \u201cshows how private companies effectively can become state media working for one party.\u201d To allow social-media platforms immunity when they have taken it upon themselves to police content would be a loss of \u201cthe greatest single advance in free speech via an unregulated Internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Economist: Yes, It\u2019s a V-Shaped Rebound<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cShutdowns of \u2018nonessential\u2019 businesses caused real GDP to drop at a 31.4 percent annual rate in the second quarter,\u201d recalls economist Brian Wesbury at RealClearPolitics<\/a>. Yet \u201ca V-shaped recovery is being traced out.\u201d Later this month, he says, a report will show third-quarter real GDP rebounding at a 33.4 percent annual clip \u2014 \u201cone of the largest jumps in output the US has ever experienced.\u201d It\u2019s \u201ca testament to the underlying strength of the US economy before the shutdowns\u201d and the \u201cseemingly unlimited ingenuity of the American people.\u201d It\u2019s fortunate we \u201centered this government-mandated recession with the highest incomes and lowest poverty rate\u201d ever recorded.<\/p>\n

Freedom fighter: Unchecked Putin<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAlexey Navalny is the biggest thorn in Vladimir Putin\u2019s side,\u201d declares The New Yorker\u2019s Masha Gessen<\/a>. Many of his fellow dissidents, such as Garry Kasparov, are exiles or, like politician Boris Nemtsov, dead. When Navalny realized on a flight from Siberia he\u2019d been poisoned, he tells Gessen, \u201cI informed the flight attendant that I was about to die, right there on their plane, and I lay down.\u201d He survived. \u201cI find myself living inside of a James Bond movie,\u201d except \u201cI\u2019m like a little old man.\u201d The nerve agent Novichok has taken its toll. \u201cNow, pulling a T-shirt off \u2014 that\u2019s truly difficult.\u201d Putin, his chief critic says is \u201cthe most powerful man on the planet, because nothing keeps him in check. Sure, the US president leads a stronger country, but he is constrained by the courts, by Congress, by the media, by the opposing party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legal eagle: Ignorant Opinions on Originalism <\/strong><\/p>\n

Some critics of Judge Amy Coney Barrett\u2019s jurisprudence, such as Jamelle Bouie of The New York Times and Hayes Brown of MSNBC, plainly didn\u2019t do their research, Ilya Somin explains at The Volokh Conspiracy<\/a>. They claim \u201coriginalists\u201d ignore the huge impact of the post-Civil War amendments to the Constitution, an error that is intended \u201cto privilege white men over blacks and other racial minorities.\u201d But \u201cthey are badly wrong\u201d and \u201cguilty of ignoring a vast originalist literature devoted to that very subject.\u201d Professors such as Michael McConnell, Steve Calabresi, Christina Mulligan, Randy Barnett, Akhil Amar and Somin himself have written extensively on the issue \u2014 as did \u201cprominent early originalists such as Robert Bork and Raoul Berger going back to the 1960s,\u201d while Justices Clarence Thomas, William Rehnquist and others confronted it in their high-court opinions. Bouie, Brown & Co. \u201cshould at least consult relevant specialists before making sweeping claims about originalism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Don Right Not To Talk to Beijing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Actions will speak louder than words when it comes to dealing with \u201cruthless China,\u201d argues Gordon G. Chang at Newsweek<\/a>. President Trump should continue to ignore calls from national-security professionals, including Henry Kissinger, to begin \u201clong-term discussions with China\u201d \u2014 talk \u201cwith a militant Chinese regime will almost certainly lead to unfavorable outcomes.\u201d Beijing historically \u201cviolates obligations and expects counter-parties to comply with theirs,\u201d proving it\u2019s \u201cfutile trying to constrain China\u2019s militant regime with words.\u201d The \u201clet\u2019s-talk-to-China app<\/a>roach\u201d has \u201cfailed\u201d for a half-century, as \u201cby trying to talk, as various administrations have done, China perceives an American unwillingness to act.\u201d The way forward is to \u201cstop talking to Beijing and start confronting it with vigor.\u201d<\/p>\n
