But this time, it\u2019s electric.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As already mentioned, GM estimates that it\u2019ll produce 1,000hp and over 11,000 lb ft of torque, enough to help it go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds \u2014 <em>allegedly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>[Read: <span dir=\"auto\">What audience intelligence data tells us about the 2020 US presidential election<\/span>]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s also slated to come with a host of driver aids such as under body cameras for whenever it goes off-road, <\/span>and a \u201ccrab walk\u201d feature, which enables the truck to strafe its way diagonally out of tight spots. Looking at it head-on, you\u2019re faced with the recognizable slab-like front-end, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2012\/09\/gaspods\/\">a lobster it is not<\/a>. It\u2019s also supposed to be able to add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes when hooked up to a compatible charger.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_biggest_battery_EVer\"><\/span>The biggest battery EVer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>How does it do this? Well, it crams in an absolutely huge battery pack. Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LkM0L4_W_pM\">who got a sneak peak at the Hummer EV<\/a> \u2014 was told that the battery is more than 200 kWh in capacity. <span>That\u2019s more than double the size of the average\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__highlight\">EV<\/span><span>\u00a0battery. Given that its 0-60 time and range is on par with Teslas, which have much smaller packs, this is a big hint at how inefficient this thing really is.\u00a0<\/span><span>This is a problem, but we\u2019ll get to that shortly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The upside is that the Hummer is built on GM\u2019s Ultium platform that\u2019s going to underpin a smorgasbord of EVs. Luxurious, d<span>raped in leather, and with space for five people. Indeed, there\u2019s a lot to love about it, and there is a truck loving part of me that is very\u00a0<em>very<\/em> excited about it. But I also hate that part of myself.<\/p>\n<p><span>The new Hummer couldn\u2019t be any different from the original civilian Hummer (which is a very good thing) but at the same time, it\u2019s still very much\u00a0<\/span><i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">a Hummer<\/i><span>\u00a0in spirit and that\u2019s very bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s inefficient and needlessly excessive. This truck isn\u2019t exactly about saving the planet. On its launch website, there\u2019s just one mention of it being zero emission, one! But that\u2019s why we love it, and why we hate ourselves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The focus is on performance, power, and presence, which it has in spades, but those are just a distraction from the reality that it\u2019s huge, expensive, and will never actually be used in conditions it was designed for.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amazing_truck_mediocre_EV\"><\/span>Amazing truck, mediocre EV<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I expect the Hummer to be a very good truck, perhaps one of the best. But as far as EVs go, it can\u2019t be held in high regard, simply because GMC engineers have given it its performance by using a massive battery.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, it uses pouch cell batteries, not cylindrical cells that are becoming increasingly common. Pouch cell EV batteries have been around for ages, they\u2019re used in the BMW i3 which is getting on for eight years old. Cars of the future need to be intelligently and efficiently designed, should use resources sparingly, and should strive for minimal impact on the world. But the Hummer\u2026? If GMC can convert even a few hundred old-school truck-loving coal-rolling climate change-deniers who are unable to let go of the past to EVs then it\u2019s a worthy victory.<\/p>\n<p>The main reason the original civilian Hummers, the H1 and H2, were pulled from production 10 years ago is because they drank gasoline like it was booze the night before new lockdown measures, and pumped out emissions like there was no tomorrow. The electric drivetrain of this new one might fix that, but the Hummer EV is still massive.
