Fresh off their botched theft of a heterosexual penguin couple\u2019s eggs, opportunistic gay penguins in the Netherlands have now turned to snatching the potential offspring of lesbian birds.<\/p>\n

This time, the expectant fathers \u2014 who reside at Amersfoort\u2019s DierenPark \u2014 made off with the lesbian lovebirds\u2019 entire nest, the Daily Mail reported.<\/a> They are currently taking turns baby-sitting their quarry while the other hunts for food.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unlikely the baby-snatchers\u2019 eggs will hatch, as they were stolen from female penguins and will not be fertilized. Last year, their attempt to steal a straight penguin couple\u2019s eggs similarly backfired after their egg didn\u2019t produce a chick.<\/p>\n

\u201cHomosexuality is fairly common in penguins, but what makes this couple remarkable is that they have gotten hold of an egg,\u201d said zookeeper Marc Belt at the time.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the lady birds don\u2019t seem too perturbed by the nest robbery, and will likely build a replacement soon as the species breeds twice per year, according to keepers.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s hoping that egg won\u2019t also be pilfered by their male counterparts, who are the dominant pair out of the enclosure\u2019s 17 penguins. \u201cEach couple in the enclosure have their own shelter but this couple has commandeered two,\u201d said zookeeper Sander Drost.<\/p>\n

The penguins aren\u2019t the first same-sex soulmates to hatch an unauthorized adoption scheme. A same-sex duo in Denmark made online waves in 2018 after \u201ckidnapping\u201d a chick while its parents were having a swim. And in August, a lesbian power couple in Valencia, Spain, successfully incubated and birthed a baby bird a la Dr. Seuss\u2019 \u201cHorton Hatches the Egg.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
