Joe Biden last week warned of \u201cthe rise of totalitarian regimes in the world,\u201d including democratic Poland and Hungary \u2014 and that \u201chalf-insulting, half-clueless remark\u201d set off a \u201cdiplomatic firestorm,\u201d sighs Gladden Pappin at Newsweek<\/a>. Yet despite the vigorous protests of leaders from the two allied states, including Polish President Andrzej Duda, the media again circled wagons around the ex-veep. \u201cTo the media class, the categorization of Poland and Hungary as \u2018totalitarian regimes\u2019 was not a gaffe at all. It did not lead to fact-checking or hasty denials.\u201d As far as the globalist establishment is concerned, \u201cvague \u00adimpressions of \u2018totalitarian\u2019 (read: nationalist, culturally traditional) rule are enough to cast aside countries that have been allied with the United States for generations. For these viceroys of global liberalism, the new hostility is fully intentional.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201clevel of liberal hysteria\u201d from \u201cdaily end-is-nigh stories about nightmare election scenarios\u201d is nuts, writes The New Republic\u2019s Walter Shapiroz<\/a>. \u201cOutlandish scenarios about democracy in peril flourish on the left in times of stress and uncertainty,\u201d but the \u201cwidespread dystopian forecasts about Election Day and beyond are also rooted in PTSD from the 2016 election.\u201d Relax, \u201cfrightened anti-Trumpers lying awake at 3 o\u2019clock in the morning.\u201d Networks won\u2019t call the election for President Trump early as some states wait to count mail-in ballots: They\u2019ve \u201cnever called swing states based on fragmentary \u2014 and misleading \u2014 early returns,\u201d and \u201conly two of the last five presidential elections were even decided on election night.\u201d The \u201cphantasmagoria of fears about a stolen election\u201d is just \u201ca window into the fragile psyches of downtrodden Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education beat: Science<\/a> Says Reopen Schools<\/strong><\/p>\n

New data on school safety and COVID-19 infection rates \u201cargue strongly for opening K-12 schools,\u201d report David R. Henderson and Ryan Sullivan at The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. Research led by Brown prof Emily Oster shows schools are not superspreaders, with positivity rates among 200,000 kids at just 0.13 percent, and 0.24 percent for staff. Those are \u201cwonderfully low\u201d numbers; the \u201coverall US case rate is 2.6 percent.\u201d Research also shows \u201cextremely low\u201d hospitalization and death rates for kids. And the \u201cweighty costs of not opening\u201d schools include lost earnings that boost the risk of death and the \u201cimpact\u201d on \u201csingle-parent, low-income and minority households.\u201d Losses from keeping schools closed are \u201chuge,\u201d and the benefits \u201csmall,\u201d so \u201clet\u2019s get kids back\u201d into classes and playgrounds.<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: Big Tech Burned by Biden Blunder<\/strong><\/p>\n

USA Today spiked Glenn Harlan Reynolds\u2019 latest column because editors were \u201cafraid to touch\u201d the Hunter Biden scandal, so he put it up on his blog, Instapundit: He details how Facebook and Twitter\u2019s censorship of The Post proves his point of a year ago: Big Tech firms have \u201cgrown into powerful monopolists . . . using their power over the national conversation to not only sell ads, but also to promote a political agenda.\u201d It backfired this time, as \u201ceven people who didn\u2019t care so much about Hunter Biden\u2019s racket nonetheless became angry and started talking about the story.\u201d Lawmakers must now act to prevent \u201cother such \u00adefforts\u201d in the future. This ordeal \u201chas brought home just how much power\u201d these firms \u201cwield, and how crudely they\u2019re willing to wield it.\u201d Now \u201cthey shouldn\u2019t be surprised at the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liberals: Don Exposed US Foreign-Policy Follies<\/strong><\/p>\n

While absolutely not endorsing President Trump\u2019s actions, Tom McTague and Peter Nicholas admit at The Atlantic<\/a> that he has done one huge service: \u201cAfter decades of international adventurers that have left the US overstretched, overwhelmed and overburdened, it was Trump who blurted out the uncomfortable truth: American foreign policy was failing and had been for several decades.\u201d Trump\u2019s answers may be wrong, but \u201cAmerican leaders were na\u00efve to allow China such an easy pass into the World Trade Organization; NAFTA did help hollow out American manufacturing; Europe was allowed to free-ride on American largesse; and the US has become too tied up in military commitments.\u201d And \u201che was correct on the most fundamental point of all: the direct link between America\u2019s economic strength and its power and stature abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n
