\n James Randi, a magician and paranormal debunker better known professionally as \u201cThe Amazing Randi,\u201d has died at 92.<\/p>\n

His death was announced on Twitter<\/a> Wednesday by the Randi Foundation, a nonprofit organization that investigates paranormal and \u201cpseudoscientific\u201d claims and promotes \u201ccritical thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very sad to say that James Randi passed away yesterday, due to age-related causes,\u201d the foundation wrote. \u201cHe had an amazing life. We will miss him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Randi, born Randall Zwinge in Toronto, was an accomplished magician who made numerous app<\/a>earances on \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d when Johnny Carson, a self-proclaimed magic aficionado, was its host in the 1970s. But Randi was perhaps most recognized for his efforts to debunk psychics and paranormal phenomena. In 1972, he famously accused spoon-bending psychic Uri Geller of being a fraud. In a subsequent 1973 appearance on Carson\u2019s show \u2014 for which the host sought Randi\u2019s help gathering props beforehand \u2014 Geller failed to live up to his claim<\/a> of being able to bend metal objects with his mind. In 1975, Randi wrote a book, \u201cThe Truth About Uri Geller<\/a>,\u201d that challenged his claims.<\/p>\n

For many years, starting in 1964, Randi even offered cash \u2014 in the form of a \u201c$1 Million Paranormal Challenge\u201d \u2014 to anyone who could prove supernatural or paranormal abilities. He never had any takers.<\/p>\n

Randi also was a founder of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, a paranormal investigative group.<\/p>\n

At a 2015 screening of the film \u201cAn Honest Liar,\u201d a documentary about Randi, the magician succinctly explained<\/a> why, for decades, he felt compelled to take down those he saw as fakes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese people do positive damage to believers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Illusionist Penn Jillette \u2014 who with Raymond Teller forms the magic duo of Penn & Teller \u2014 paid homage to Randi in two separate tweets. \u201cGoodbye to the truly Amazing James Randi, our inspiration, mentor and dear friend. We will love you forever,\u201d Jillette posted<\/a>. He followed up<\/a> with a statement that included their \u201clast picture\u201d together, writing, \u201cI can\u2019t type through the tears. This will be a hard day of making tv. I love you Randi. You invented us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Randi is survived by his husband, Jos\u00e9 Alvarez.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
