Today, we\u2019re watching a video about the cosmic horror of Lucio Fulci\u2019s The Beyond.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>Cosmic horror is a tricky sub-genre to get right on film. And I can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve giddily opened a list of \u201cbest cosmic horror <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>\u201d only to be dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed with results that miss the mark. <\/p>\n<p>So, to make sure we\u2019re all on the same page, let\u2019s talk about what cosmic horror is and what it isn\u2019t. <\/p>\n<p>Cosmic horror is indelibly associated in the popular imagination with horror\u2019s embarrassing racist uncle, <strong>H.P. Lovecraft<\/strong>. In a letter to <em>Weird Tales<\/em>\u2018 editor, Farnsworth Wright, Lovecraft <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hplovecraft.com\/writings\/quotes.aspx\">defined cosmic horror<\/a> as \u201cthe fundamental premise that common human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a pretty solid description. And given the prominence of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitterkarella\/status\/1031633488569491456?s=20\">Unknowable Terrors in Lovecraft\u2019s work<\/a>, you\u2019d be forgiven for lumping the two in together by default. <\/p>\n<p>But the reality is that Lovecraftian horror and cosmic horror are not always the same thing. (For instance, Lovecraftian horror makes room for xenophobic campfire tales like <em>The Shadow over Innsmouth<\/em>.) <\/p>\n<p>It is also not true that all cosmic horror is, well, <em>cosmic<\/em>. While outer space is certainly fertile ground for the incomprehensible, there\u2019s a clear difference between a monster mash like <em>Alien <\/em>and the maddening peek beyond the veil of <em>Event Horizon<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>The struggle of coming up with a clear definition of cosmic horror (which is all about how horrifying it is when definitions fail us) is very funny. But when you get a better grip on what cosmic horror is actually all about, it can open up the subgenre beyond its traditional confines. <\/p>\n<p>Case in point: it never occurred to me to connect the dots between cosmic horror and Italian splatter master <strong>Lucio Fulci<\/strong>. And yet, one of the things that makes Fulci\u2019s films so appealing is that they regularly disavow logic in favor of more chaotic, nightmarish rhythms.<em> <\/em>The purpose and origin of malevolent forces are rarely explained. <\/p>\n<p>And Fulci\u2019s overall attitude toward \u201cmaking sense\u201d tends to be an intentional hearty shrug. To boot, there is always a latent implication that the presiding bloodbath is part of some larger unknown conspiracy. <\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Beyond<\/strong><\/em>, the second film in Fulci\u2019s \u201cGates of Hell\u201d trilogy, is perhaps the best example of this. And the video essay below explains why, from the film\u2019s ties to the writings of cosmic horror pioneer <strong>Clark Ashton Smith<\/strong> to its stylish commitment to being more of an experience than a text that can be parsed and understood.<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
