\n In the cartoonish virtual world of the game \u201cAmong Us\u201d, everyone is sus<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSus,\u201d short for \u201csuspect\u201d or \u201csuspicious,\u201d is just one of the many nuances of the interstellar murder mystery game that has been the most download<\/a>ed game on Apple\u2019s App Store and Google Play since July, gaining more than 100 million new users during that time, the Verge reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Among said \u201cnoobs\u201d (that\u2019s gamer-speak for \u201crookie\u201d) is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Her debut Twitch stream while playing \u201cAmong Us\u201d \u2014 along with fellow Congresswoman Ilhan Omar \u2014 garnered nearly 700,000 viewers total for a get-out-the-vote campaign. Between AOC\u2019s peak viewer count of 440,000 and an added 200,000 views across streams set up by other players, including Twitch celebs Pokimane and HasanAbi, the event was the third-largest<\/a> combined broadcast in Twitch history, according to Forbes.<\/a><\/p>\n

First released in 2018 by the indie gaming company InnerSloth, few knew about \u201cAmong Us\u201d prior to the pandemic \u2014 until Twitch star Chance Morris, a\u2009k\u2009a Sodapoppin, began streaming the game to his 2.8 million fans in July, the New York Times recently reported<\/a>. It takes place on an intergalactic space station populated by \u201ccrewmates\u201d: four to 10 players who may be a closed network of friends or just random players.<\/p>\n

But each group of crewmates includes one or more \u201cimpostors,\u201d who lurk and are secretly charged at the outset with murdering as many crewmates as possible without being suspected. Meanwhile, crewmates must also perform a checklist of chores aboard the ship while avoiding being killed. Players will periodically convene to discuss who they believe to be the impostor and vote them off the ship. Whether you\u2019re the impostor or not, the object is to survive.<\/p>\n

Because strategy, debate and deceit are crucial to \u201cAmong Us\u201d, players will meet in various ways to share intel, make their case for who they believe to be the suspected impostor or defend themselves from persecution as an alleged imposter. For many young people, that meeting ground became Discord, a free group-chat platform. The Times discovered one Discord server with around 98,000 mostly teenage members.<\/p>\n

The free mobile platform is available on iPhone<\/a> and Android<\/a>, while a desktop version for Windows computers<\/a> is available to download for $4.99.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone is aged 13 to 20,\u201d said Benson, the Discord server\u2019s 13-year-old administrator. He told the Times, \u201cIt\u2019s a way to pass the time when you don\u2019t have anything else to do. Since we can\u2019t really congregate in a public area like the park, \u2018Among Us\u2019 allows us to be online social<\/a> distancing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bona fide adult celebs are also getting in on the trend, including rapper Logic and actor Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, who played the Mountain in \u201cGame of Thrones.\u201d Granted, the mainstream star power has yet to surpass that of the \u201cAnimal Crossing\u201d craze during the early days of the pandemic, but the AOC team\u2019s stunt was a savvy one to pull off just before the general<\/a> election.<\/p>\n

As political podcaster Amanda Litman pointed out on Twitter<\/a>: \u201cIf you add up viewers across the various streams, more than half a million people are watching @AOC on Twitch \u2014 she\u2019s hosting the biggest GOTV rally of 2020.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
