“# Brock Pierce: True decentralization is a way off <\/strong>”

U.S. presidential candidate Brock Pierce believes true decentralization, in its purest form, does not exist today, and is not practical in the near future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He told Celsius founder and CEO Alex Mashinsky in an hour-long #MOIP\u00a0interview<\/a> released earlier today that while DeFi, is headed towards decentralization, it shouldn\u2019t attempt to be entirely decentralized right now.<\/p>\n

The crypto venture capitalist turned politician stated a hybrid app<\/a>roach including both decentralized and centralized control is more appropriate.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of us in this space general<\/a>ly believe in decentralization,\u201d he said. \u201cThe reality is that it [a hybrid approach] is just more practical in the short term. We\u2019re not there yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pierce recalled that he had a similar conversation in the early stages of Tether: \u201cDo we do this decentralized or do you do this with one foot in the old [centralized] world and one foot in the new [decentralized] world.\u201d Ultimately, Tether chose the latter.<\/p>\n

He said that DeFi at present was a stepping stone towards true decentralization, and the current innovations make up \u201cthe staircase that ultimately leads to the promise we\u2019ve all been dreaming of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given Celsius has taken flak for being too centralized, it\u2019s not entirely surprising Mashinsky agreed the discussion should be around hybrid solutions initially:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about DeFi vs. CeFi, or the version Celsius has, versus the version that Compound has.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHalf of the assets locked up today in DeFi are centralized assets,\u201d he explained. \u201cMost people just don\u2019t understand that. Anyone that calls it pure DeFi doesn\u2019t understand anything about the blockchain.\u201d<\/p>\n

The entrepreneur pointed out that \u201cif a court order was issued to lock up those assets\u201d it wouldn\u2019t matter how the assets are locked up, those institutions can freeze those assets. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not happy about it, I\u2019m just explaining that there is no version of pure DeFi today. Of course, we all want that, but we don\u2019t live in that world yet. The most advanced of us have one leg in the decentralized world, and one leg in the centralized world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Referring back to his political approach, Pierce explained that trying to decentralize the U.S. government would mean taking authority off the federal government and handing it to state governments. \u201cFrom a political perspective, that\u2019s where I stand,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
