\n Marge Champion, a dancer-actress in Golden Age movies<\/a>, Broadway musicals and television shows, has died. She was 101.<\/p>\n

Champion, who was the real-life model for Disney\u2019s animated Snow White and won an Emmy for choreographing the 1975 telefilm \u201cQueen of the Stardust Ballroom,\u201d died Wednesday in Los Angeles, dance instructor Pierre Dulaine confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.<\/a><\/p>\n

Marjorie Celeste Belcher was born on Sept. 2, 1919. Her father was noted Hollywood dance teacher Ernest Belcher, who taught Fred Astaire and Shirley Temple \u2014 and was friends with Walt Disney. This led to the animation team working on 1937\u2019s \u201cSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs\u201d studying her movements on a soundstage in order to make their animated leading lady move realistically on screen.<\/p>\n

Starting at 14 years old, she danced for the all-male team a coupled days a month \u2014 at 10 bucks a day \u2014 for two years.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of them had been a young girl or knew how a dress would do this or that or the other thing,\u201d she said in a 1998 interview<\/a> with the Archive of American Television. \u201cMost of the animators [before then] took their characters \u2026 out of themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

She later served as Disney\u2019s model for the Blue Fairy in 1940\u2019s \u201cPinocchio,\u201d Hyacinth Hippo in 1940\u2019s \u201cFantasia\u201d and Mr. Stock in 1941\u2019s \u201cDumbo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marge and her famed husband\/dance partner Gower Champion \u2014 also a student of her father\u2019s \u2014 were married from 1947 until they divorced in 1973. He died in 1980 at 61.<\/p>\n

She and Gower co-starred in several MGM musicals, including George Sidney\u2019s 1951 remake of \u201cShow Boat,\u201d with Howard Keel, Kathryn Grayson and Ava Gardner. They went on to app<\/a>ear in a films with Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Bing Crosby.<\/p>\n

The 5-foot-2-inch dancer made her Broadway debut in 1945\u2019s \u201cThe Fair Witch in Dark of the Moon.\u201d Rechristened \u201cMarjorie Bell,\u201d she formed an act with her new husband called Gower & Bell, playing nightclubs and co-starring with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca on NBC\u2019s \u201cThe Admiral Broadway Revue.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the summer of 1957, the pair headlined \u201cThe Marge and Gower Champion Show.\u201d \u201cEach of the Champions\u2019 dances tells a story,\u201d a TV critic once wrote according to THR, \u201cand virtually every leap, every move, every gesture tells part of that story.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair also choreographed Broadway musicals, including the original production of \u201cHello, Dolly!,\u201d starring Carol Channing, which premiered in 1964 and ran through 1975.<\/p>\n

Marge\u2019s married her last husband, director Boris Sagal, in 1977. He died in 1981 from injuries suffered after he accidentally walked into a helicopter blade on the set of the NBC miniseries \u201cWorld War III.\u201d<\/p>\n

Survivors include a step-daughter, actress Katey Sagal (\u201cSons of Anarchy\u201d), and her son, producer-director Gregg Champion. She also had two other step-daughters, twins Liz and Jean Sagal (stars of the 1980s sitcom \u201cDouble Trouble\u201d), and stepson Joey, an actor.<\/p>\n
