Mathias\u2019 invitation is im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely suspect because, well, look at the scenario: shelter, food, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> resources are scarce, but some rando has promised a full meal, as well as an evening of sinister, interactive dinner theater, from inside a cavernous, disused luxury hotel. \u201cMay I show you my wonderland?\u201d asks Mathias, from behind neatly parted hair, a black bow tie, and a well-pressed dinner jacket. Mathias is directly addressing Alice (Tuva Olivia Remman), Jacob and Leonora\u2019s impressionable young daughter. If you don\u2019t know where this story is headed, you\u2019re either in denial or not paying attention.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<section>\n<section>\n<p>Thankfully, Mathias\u2019 obviously evil nature is sort of the crux of \u201cCadaver\u201d: what do you do when you have no choice but to accept threatening new possibilities at face value, because, in order to survive, you have to make yourself think positive? That tension not only defines Leonora and Jacob\u2019s relationship\u2014she\u2019s a reluctant optimist while he\u2019s a mopey pessimist\u2014but also Mathias\u2019 character: he\u2019s clearly malicious, and also maybe the only <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> in town. \u201cCadaver\u201d is a suggestive fable about struggling to be hopeful despite, well, everything. It&#8217;s also a little too monotonous and uninvolving to be of great solace right now.   <\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, \u201cCadaver\u201d does have an effectively chilly ambience, which helps a little whenever writer\/director Jarand Herdal\u2019s scenario is as obvious as Mathias. Herdal\u2019s story mostly follows Leonora as the most sympathetic protagonist is inevitably separated from her family while they explore Mathias\u2019 hotel. Jacob is relatable, too, but it\u2019s much easier to side with Leonora given that she\u2019s the one who insists that \u201cwe have to believe that things will work out.\u201d \u201cHow can you be so sure?\u201d Jacob asks her one night while they lie in bed, their faces juxtaposed in complimentary halves. \u201cBecause it has to be,\u201d she responds inelegantly.   <\/p>\n<p>Bear in mind, trusting Mathias is the thing that \u201chas to be\u201d done. Which requires a Herculean effort, as far as suspending one\u2019s disbelief goes, since Mathias\u2019 dinner party is advertised as an \u201cexclusive show\u201d for anyone who wishes to \u201cescape the horrors.\u201d \u201cHow much are [tickets]?\u201d Leonara asks a barker who looks suspiciously like the Child Catcher from \u201cChitty Chitty Bang Bang.\u201d \u201cHow much do you have?\u201d he replies. That\u2019s it, that\u2019s the scene.   <\/p>\n<p>Mathias\u2019 castle\/hotel isn\u2019t much more inviting. Incautious guests are seated before a harshly-lit stage in an otherwise dark ballroom. Formally attired waiters bring out steaming trays of mystery meat, which are naturally picked clean by Leonora and the others. Then Mathias takes the stage, and asks his guests to explore his hotel\u2019s rooms, which are filled with actors performing inscrutable and very Scandinavian mini-dramas throughout: mostly couples arguing with each other, or, in one case, having dispassionate sex. Mathias\u2019 guests soon dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear, including Jacob and Alice, leaving Leonora alone to discover what exactly Mathias wants.   <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<section>\n<section>\n<p>But there really isn\u2019t much to Mathias, which is arguably his most frightening trait. He\u2019s a demagogue, but even his speeches aren\u2019t especially rousing: \u201cWhat makes us human in times like these?\u201d he asks his wary guests. \u201cWhat separates us from the animals?\u201d Short answer: \u201cLove.\u201d Longer answer: nothing in Mathias\u2019 castle, a place defined by lush, red hallway carpeting, a rumpled pile of children\u2019s clothing that Alice discovers in a dark corner, and a roaring furnace tended by, uh, some actors. \u201cOne thing is certain,\u201d Mathias tells us, in a rare moment of honesty: \u201cwe need to feel.\u201d He says this after he warns his captive audience that, \u201cEverything that takes place tonight is staged. Everything is a show. Everything.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p>So we follow Leonora, a former actress, as she applies the sort of \u201cimaginative\u201d training that she hints at early on in \u201cCadaver\u201d when Alice asks her mother how she overcame stage fright: \u201c&#8230; sometimes you have to face your fears. That way you won\u2019t be so scared.\u201d That line pays off later on, and in a mostly satisfying way, but getting there is a bit of a slog. You have to wade through several unmoving scenes where Leonora discovers some things that are often glaring to everyone, including herself.
