\n For Bruce Springsteen<\/a>, the E Street Band is more than the trusted posse of players that he was born to run with throughout his storied career.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re his religion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe E Street Band is not a job \u2014 it is a vocation, a calling,\u201d says the New Jersey rock god in the new App<\/a>le TV+ documentary \u201cBruce Springsteen\u2019s Letter to You,\u201d premiering Friday. \u201cIt is both one of the most important things in your life \u2014 and, of course, it\u2019s only rock \u2018n\u2019 roll.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film goes inside the making of \u201cLetter to You,\u201d Springsteen\u2019s new album that also drops Friday. Over five days of recording his first studio LP with the E Street Band since 2014\u2019s \u201cHigh Hopes,\u201d the doc \u2014 featuring narration by Springsteen \u2014 captures their undeniable, unbreakable bond.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese guys had a secret language together,\u201d director Thom Zimny<\/a> told The Post. The experience was like \u201cwatching a master class on a band and a bandleader,\u201d he said. \u201cThey were completely alive in the moment, but they also took the time to reflect on the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having worked with the Boss for 20 years, Zimny \u2014 who won an Emmy for directing 2018\u2019s \u201cSpringsteen on Broadway\u201d \u2014 got a new perspective as \u201ca fly on the wall\u201d watching him record his first album live together with the E Street Band since 1984\u2019s \u201cBorn in the U.S.A.\u201d (The parts for \u201cHigh Hopes\u201d were recorded separately.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you walk into a room and you see the E Street Band \u2026 it\u2019s like the energy of a concert in a small room,\u201d said Zimny. \u201cThe biggest surprise was this beautiful thing that unfolds when they all start to play together a song that they\u2019ve never heard before. I don\u2019t think I was ready for it. There\u2019s something magical that happens when the E Street Band gathers together and creates a song. I was just grateful that I had cameras to hopefully capture it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Springsteen describes his \u201c45-year conversation\u201d with his musical brethren toward the beginning of the black-and-white film: \u201cThe E Street Band is a finely tuned instrument of great flexibility and power. They can float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Our years of playing together have created a shorthand and efficiency in the studio comparable to that of a finely tuned racing engine. We are a unit 45 years in the making, decades in the refining, and we bring that power to bear when we engage with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Growing up in Point Pleasant, NJ, Zimny worshipped Springsteen long before he got to collaborate with his idol. \u201cMy connection with Bruce came early on, listening to \u2018Darkness on the Edge of Town\u2019 as the first record that I owned,\u201d he said. \u201cI was able to really get a sense of how cinematic his music was \u2026 The music has carried on and grown with me throughout the chapters in my own development as both an artist and a man.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Zimny is able to balance being a lifelong fan with doing the job at hand. \u201cI feel like the responsibility I have working with Bruce is to be able to wear many hats in telling the story,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a part of me that wants to draw upon being a fan and remembering how I connected to some of the music. But I also have to be in the moment collaborating with an artist that I admire. There\u2019s not a moment of fandom that carries over and gets in the way of being able to be creative in the space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking back on shooting \u201cBruce Springsteen\u2019s Letter to You\u201d a year ago \u2014 before social<\/a> distancing was a thing and live music came to a halt \u2014 is \u201cbittersweet\u201d for Zimny, whether it\u2019s watching the band hug each other or seeing them do shots together at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s small gestures that read differently now to me,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can hear their excitement of going on the road and sharing this music with fans. I\u2019m just very grateful to have the trust with this band and Bruce to capture this moment right before everything was shut down.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
