\n Not since President Bill Clinton said, \u201cIt depends on what the meaning of the word \u2018is\u2019 is,\u201d has the world seen such disingenuous parsing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ghislaine Maxwell, in a freshly unsealed deposition from 2016 that was released Thursday, surpassed her good friend Bill in cynical misunderstandings of simple words and concepts.<\/p>\n

Pressed on what she knew about child-sex-trafficker-rapist Jeffrey Epstein, for whom she allegedly recruited underage girls \u2014 girls she, too, allegedly sexually abused \u2014 Maxwell sounded like someone who barely speaks English or has suffered a massive brain bleed.<\/p>\n

On whether she ever recruited females for Epstein: \u201cFirst of all, can you please clarify the question. I don\u2019t understand what you mean by \u2018female.\u2019 I don\u2019t understand what you mean by \u2018recruit.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer representing alleged victim Virginia Giuffre asked Maxwell if she identified as female.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain,\u201d Maxwell said, \u201cI don\u2019t understand what \u2018female\u2019 \u2014 I am a 54-year-old woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is someone who flew around the world, entertaining at least one U.S. president, heads of state, royalty \u2014 Prince Andrew, the world will never let you escape this \u2014 billionaires, titans of tech and industry. Yet Maxwell repeatedly requested clarifications such as:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean by \u2018romantic\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean by \u2018know\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean by \u2018prostitution\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s a sex toy?\u201d<\/p>\n

To the question, \u201cDid she look like a child?\u201d Maxwell responds, \u201cI don\u2019t know what you mean, if she looked like a child.\u201d<\/p>\n

On whether she preyed on school grounds for schoolgirls: \u201cWhat do you mean by \u2018school\u2019? Let\u2019s characterize \u2018school.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Incredibly, only one person banged the table in frustration here, and it wasn\u2019t the interrogating lawyer. It was Maxwell.<\/p>\n

Q: \u201cDid you or Jeffrey Epstein ever ask any female to become pregnant and carry Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s baby for you or for Jeffrey?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ghislaine: \u201cYou need to be very specific.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon the presentation of a police report in which 30 minor children alleged Epstein sexually abused them \u2014 one 13-year-old girl \u201cupset [and] crying hysterically\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you believe that Jeffrey Epstein abused minor children?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ghislaine: \u201cCan you explain what you mean by the question actually?\u201d<\/p>\n

Like the psychopath she is, Maxwell displayed no emotion when questioned about the most disgusting things anyone could be accused of: grooming young girls and teenagers as sex slaves, abusing them, forcing them to have sex with much older men, taking their passports and rendering them powerless. Not even when asked about two 12-year-old girls allegedly presented to Epstein as a birthday present did Maxwell flinch.<\/p>\n

Instead, she expressed indignity at this sordid line of questioning \u2014 \u201cYou don\u2019t ask me questions like that!\u201d she snapp<\/a>ed at one point \u2014 and, incredibly, condescended to the white-shoe lawyer conducting this deposition that \u201cperhaps you are not really familiar with what massage is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am,\u201d the lawyer says. \u201cI don\u2019t need a lecture on massage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMassage,\u201d in Epstein\u2019s realm, was code for sex with minors. Self-awareness is clearly not Maxwell\u2019s strong suit.<\/p>\n

Instead, she\u2019s very concerned here with making sure her interlocutors know just how essential she was to Epstein\u2019s empire. She was something of the house photographer, she said, and while sure, there may have been a nude photo shoot here or there, \u201cI mostly take pictures of landscapes and things . . . architectural pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her job, she said, was also to hire architects, chefs, interior decorators, gardeners, and pilots \u2014 though she expressed confusion as to whether she technically \u201cinterviewed\u201d them before \u201chiring\u201d them.<\/p>\n

A regular Lady of the Manor who saw nothing, heard nothing, and is sure of nothing except that Guiffre is making this all up for money and fame (exactly the kind of fame every young girl dreams of, right?).<\/p>\n

\u201cAn awful fantasist,\u201d Maxwell called Giuffre, \u201c . . . an absolute total liar and you all know she lied on multiple things . . . her entire story is one giant tissue of lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

An unfortunate image, that tissue.<\/p>\n

How telling that Maxwell didn\u2019t prevaricate here. For someone who claims not to know anything about this decades-long criminal enterprise, how could Maxwell have been so sure Giuffre is a liar who is lying about everything? After all, you can\u2019t prove a negative.<\/p>\n

This entire deposition is yet another violation of Epstein\u2019s victims. But what it lacks in detail it more than makes up for in character study, revealing Maxwell as the vile, vainglorious, supercilious and unremorseful criminal she\u2019s accused of being.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
