Joss Whedon<\/strong>\u2018s return to the small screen \u2014 and his old stomping grounds of supernaturally gifted female leads saving the world \u2014 was already exciting enough. But now,\u00a0The Nevers\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>cast member\u00a0Nick Frost<\/strong> is adding more fuel to the hype train. Frost teased that\u00a0The Nevers<\/em> is a \u201ccomplicated and fresh\u201d sci-fi series<\/a> that befits Whedon\u2019s promise that this show could be the \u201cmost ambitious narrative\u201d of his entire career thus far.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Collider<\/a>, Nick Frost gave an update on\u00a0The Nevers<\/em>, an upcoming Joss Whedon series for HBO that heralds the Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em> creator\u2019s return to TV. \u201cIt looks fucking crazy, it looks amazing. I think the script<\/a> is fantastic. My character\u2019s like a serial lunatic,\u201d Frost said. The sci-fi series already has a pretty catchy premise \u2014 Victorian-era women with \u201cunusual\u201d abilities save the world \u2014 but Frost said that\u00a0The Nevers<\/em>\u00a0distinguishes itself from other shows of the genre:<\/p>\n

\u201cApart from the fact there\u2019s a supernatural element, it just feels totally different. It jumps time zones. I mean, even me with a broad kind of lexicon of knowledge of the supernatural and the genre, I was reading the scripts thinking, \u2018Fucking hell, this is gonna be incredible.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Nevers<\/em> began shooting in October 2019, but was put on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Production picked up again about a month ago, Frost revealed, and they managed to wrap the 10-episode season. But Frost is unsure when the Whedon-directed series will be released. \u201cI don\u2019t know how HBO are gonna drop it. I think COVID might have split a big season of 10 into two of five, but that literally changes all the time, so I don\u2019t know.\u201d But despite the uncertain release date, Frost said\u00a0The Nevers<\/em> would be worth the wait:<\/p>\n

Joss is amazing \u2014 like as a person, not as a director. He\u2019s really giving and generous of spirit and of time. But when he\u2019s on set, he\u2019s so driven and focused and mumbly. And a lot of the time it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh my god, I\u2019m not sure what you want!\u2019 Especially when you\u2019ve got a face mask on as well. It\u2019s a kind of amazing way to work. But I love it. I love the character, and I think people are just gonna fucking love it. It\u2019s complicated and it\u2019s fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We know few details about\u00a0The Nevers<\/em> right now, and fewer about the role Frost is actually playing, but this is all very exciting stuff for those awaiting Whedon\u2019s return to TV, where the creator of beloved shows like\u00a0Buffy<\/em> and Firefly<\/em>\u00a0tends to thrive (I\u2019m of the opinion that long-form storytelling and smaller stakes suit Whedon better). And having helmed so many pivotal projects for Marvel Studios \u2014 and getting burned out on big superhero blockbusters \u2014 there\u2019s probably little chance that he\u2019ll get canceled early by HBO, this time. Which is good, since Whedon called\u00a0The Nevers \u201c<\/em>maybe the most ambitious narrative I\u2019ve created\u201d when the series was\u00a0first announced.<\/p>\n
