{"id":95758,"date":"2020-10-23T00:45:11","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T21:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/jacob-lawrence-painting-missing-for-60-years-rediscovered\/"},"modified":"2020-10-23T00:45:11","modified_gmt":"2020-10-22T21:45:11","slug":"jacob-lawrence-painting-missing-for-60-years-rediscovered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/jacob-lawrence-painting-missing-for-60-years-rediscovered\/","title":{"rendered":"#Jacob Lawrence painting missing for 60 years rediscovered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Jacob Lawrence painting missing for 60 years rediscovered<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/painting.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n                        A painting by American artist Jacob Lawrence that has not been seen in public for 60 years has been found and is taking its designated place in a 30-piece exhibit of Lawrence\u2019s work, officials at the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> \u201cStruggle: From the History of the American People,\u201d completed in the mid-1950s by the Black painter, was organized by the Salem-based museum and is currently showing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, with the missing piece \u2014 known as panel 16 \u2014 represented by an empty frame.<\/p>\n<p>A sharp-eyed visitor to the Met had neighbors with a Lawrence painting in their collection and, suspecting it might be part of the series, encouraged the owners to contact the New York museum.<\/p>\n<p>It was indeed a part of the series, and was added to the exhibit this week, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/21\/arts\/design\/jacob-lawrence-painting-found.html\">according to The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The owner of the long-lost panel lives on the Upper West Side in New York City, but their name is not being disclosed. It is being loaned to the exhibit. The painting had been purchased at a 1960 Christmas charity auction to benefit a music school, going for what the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper reported was \u201ca very modest sum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to learn of its discovery \u2014 one that came about thanks to close looking and careful observation by a museum visitor,\u201d Peabody Essex Museum Director and CEO Brian Kennedy said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The vivid panel \u2014 titled by the artist \u201cThere are combustibles in every State, which a spark might set fire to \u2014Washington, 26 December 1786\u201d \u2014 depicts Shays\u2019 Rebellion, the 1786\u201387 tax revolt in western Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Two armies wielding muskets fixed with bayonets face off, with one of the bayonets piercing the flesh of a foe, causing a trickle of blood to splash to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawrence\u2019s dynamic treatment of the 1786\u201387 Shays\u2019 Rebellion reinforces the overall <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a> of the series \u2014 that democratic change is possible only through the actions of engaged citizens, an argument as timely today as it was when the artist produced his radical paintings in the mid-1950s,\u201d curator Randall Griffey, of the Met\u2019s modern and contemporary art department, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The existence of the missing panel was known through a brochure that accompanied the first showing of the series in New York in 1956. The panels were exhibited again in 1958 but had not been seen together as a group until the Peabody Essex Museum\u2019s organization of the current exhibit, \u201cJacob Lawrence: The American Struggle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even with the discovery of panel 16, four panels remain unaccounted for, according to the Peabody Essex Museum.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is at the Met until Nov. 1.
