“#Richard Linklater on why he made a docuseries<\/a> about animal rescue<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Richard Linklater is pivoting from suburban ennui to man\u2019s four-legged friends in \u201cThat Animal Rescue Show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Premiering Thursday, Oct. 29 on CBS All Access, each episode of the docuseries looks at a different animal rescue organization around Linklater\u2019s hometown of Austin, TX.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hadn\u2019t really done any TV or anything, and I wasn\u2019t really trying to,\u201d Linklater, 60, tells The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I was getting to know some animal rescue people, and thought, \u2018What an interesting subculture.\u2019 It\u2019s the same impulse you\u2019d have to make a movie and put some story or characters that you care about out into the world. I think people would get a lot out of it. People want to be closer to animals. We have our dogs and cats and pet birds, but people are general<\/a>ly far removed from farm animals and wildlife \u2014 urban America in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker is best known for his slice-of-life movies capturing youth and longing such as 1993 cult hit \u201cDazed and Confused\u201d (which launched Matthew Matthew McConaughey\u2019s infamous \u2018Alright\u2019 catchphrase), the Golden Globe winning \u201cBoyhood,\u201d The \u201cBefore\u201d trilogy, and \u201cSchool of Rock,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n

Executive producing an unscript<\/a>ed small screen series is a change of pace for him, but one that felt natural, since Linklater himself has a bevy of four-legged friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the current headcount is 4 pigs, 3 donkeys, 3 goats, a lot of ducks, 8 hens, and 2 turkeys recently. [\u2018That Animal Rescue Show\u2019 is] so night and day different from what I usually do. Documentary\u2026is not how I think naturally, but it was right for this show. Ultimately, TV is a producer medium more than a director medium.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, as much as the show\u2019s format was an adjustment for Linklater, the setting came naturally to the native Texan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was where I got to know people, and one group led to another, and we were able to round out the show,\u201d he says. \u201cYou could probably drop into a lot of communities around the world and do the same show. It\u2019s certainly not exclusive to central Texas. This work is being done everywhere. But it was familiar to me, and it is<\/em> the home of the only pig pageant in the world. Austin is a little quirky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Organizations featured in \u201cThat Animal Rescue Show\u201d include Safe In Austin<\/a>; Central Texas Pig Rescue<\/a>; and Paws In Prison<\/a>, which takes dogs to a women\u2019s correctional facility for the inmates to train.<\/p>\n

The show also covers the stories of people such as Central Texas Pig Rescue founder Dan Illescas, who says onscreen that he feels a connection to the often neglected animal because he spent his own childhood in and out of foster care.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you really think about the show, it\u2019s sort of a 180 degree opposite of \u2018Tiger King\u2019 or something where you get these sleazy people exploiting the animals for money,\u201d says Linklater.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the opposite. There are some saintly people who are really spending their days helping people and animals and really putting time and energy into saving animals\u2019 lives. <\/span>I just think the people behind [animal rescue organizations] are the best kinds of people \u2014 just giving of themselves.\u201d\n <\/div>\n
