“#Tensions boil over at NYC school admissions rally<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A angry scuffle broke out at a rally backing competitive school admissions Friday after an opposing group interrupted the event.<\/p>\n

Roughly 80 supporters of screened schools \u2014 many of them South and East Asian \u2014 gathered near City Hall to demand that the DOE maintain accelerated academic programs.<\/p>\n

The action was organized by PLACE NYC, or Parent-Leaders for Accelerated Curriculum & Education.<\/p>\n

During podium addresses, about 20 counter-protesters jostled to the front of the crowd while two of them tried to unfurl a banner in front of the speakers.<\/p>\n

That attempt was met with immedia<\/a>te resistance, setting off several minutes of shouting before the volume subsided and the speakers resumed.<\/p>\n

A startled trio of local politicians who showed up to support the rally \u2014 City Council members Robert Cornegy and Ben Kallos and state Sen. Andrew Gounardes \u2014 all witnessed the fracas firsthand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey tried to push their way in,\u201d said Karlin Chan, a PLACE supporter. \u201cYou don\u2019t crash into someone else\u2019s rally. Everybody\u2019s standing, then all of a sudden they\u2019re charging through the crowd, trying to raise their banner behind the speaker podium.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tensions rose once again after one of the protesters attempted to physically block the podium as an 11-year-old Bangladeshi girl tried to address the crowd.<\/p>\n

She was eventually ushered to a clear space in front of the woman before speaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re saying if someone has a different opinion than you, you should outshout them,\u201d said PLACE member Lucas Liu. \u201cWhat kind of a way is that to teach our kids?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tajh Sutton, president of Community Education Council 14 and an opponent of screened schools, told The Post that PLACE backers were also getting physical with her group \u2014 which included city students.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll we did was walk from the back to the front of the organization,\u201d she said. \u201cWe attempted to hold up our sign, it was grabbed from us by several PLACE supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sutton said that the two sides had clashed during virtual meetings in the past and that screened school opponents wanted to make their voices heard at Friday\u2019s rally.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir violence today proves they do not care about students and they do not care about equity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Screened school opponents contend that current admissions practices favor families of means and box out low-income black and Latino students.<\/p>\n

They point to their scant enrollment figures at top city institutions like Stuyvesant HS \u2014\u00a0 which is 73 percent Asian, 19 percent white, 3 percent Hispanic and 1 percent black.<\/p>\n

In addition, they contend that screened entry metrics are arbitrary measures of potential and fail to capture a wider range of city talent.<\/p>\n

Screened school supporters counter that academically advanced kids should be able to learn in accelerated environments and that many students in competitive schools are low-income immigrants.<\/p>\n

They also stress that some of the most prominent anti-screening proponents in the city \u2014 including parent activists and DOE officials \u2014 either send or sent their kids to academically exclusive schools while simultaneously denouncing them.<\/p>\n

The Department of Education has yet to announce screened admissions policies for the coming year.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
