\n The country that introduced the world to \u201chygge\u201d now has another term for us: \u201csamfundssind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year Americans went wild for hygge, which encompasses all things cozy and comforting \u2014 but the likely 2020 \u201cword of the year\u201d in Denmark is \u201csamfundssind \u2014 which the Danish Language Council defines as \u201cputting the concern of society higher than one\u2019s own interests.\u201d More loosely translated as \u201ccommunity spirit\u201d or \u201csocial<\/a> mindedness\u201d according to the BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The term was used in March by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who noted at a press conference: \u201cWe have to stand together by keeping our distance\u2026 We need community spirit. We need help. I would like to thank \u2026 all who have so far shown that this is exactly what we have in Denmark \u2014 samfundssind.\u201d<\/p>\n

And the Danish people and companies responded immediately, with private companies getting medical equipment to help alleviate some of the pressure on healthcare services, part of the Denmark\u00a0Helping\u00a0Denmark<\/a> campaign, prompting the \u00a0Danish Medicines Agency\u2019s Director General<\/a> Thomas Senderovitz to commend them, saying the response showed \u201cincredible goodwill and community spirit,\u201d according to the BBC.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Lego factory manufactured visors for healthcare workers; the amusement park Tivoli Gardens turned into a temporary kindergarten; and double Michelin-starred restaurant, Alchemist, began cooking pasta for 12 homeless shelters in Copenhagen. As the BBC notes that while the word is now used on social media as a hashtag to highlight kind acts, \u201cperhaps most importantly, everyday people showed community spirit by following the rules.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
