{"id":97002,"date":"2020-10-25T01:11:05","date_gmt":"2020-10-24T22:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/murder-hornets-vacuumed-from-washington-hive-by-bug-pros\/"},"modified":"2020-10-25T01:11:05","modified_gmt":"2020-10-24T22:11:05","slug":"murder-hornets-vacuumed-from-washington-hive-by-bug-pros","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/murder-hornets-vacuumed-from-washington-hive-by-bug-pros\/","title":{"rendered":"#Murder hornets vacuumed from Washington hive by bug pros"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Murder hornets vacuumed from Washington hive by bug pros<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/10\/hornet-90.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n                        That\u2019s one small step for man, one giant vacuum ride toward oblivion for hornet-kind.<\/p>\n<p>Space-suited bug specialists successfully vacuumed up a nest of so-called \u201cmurder hornets\u201d in Washington state on Saturday, c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing a months-long effort to swat back the invasive, bee-slaughtering pest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGot \u2019em,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WSDAgov\/status\/1320055525887803393\">the Washington State Department of Agriculture tweeted<\/a> on Saturday afternoon, alongside photos of their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVacuumed out several #AsianGiantHornets from a tree cavity near Blain this morning,\u201d the tweet read.<\/p>\n<p>The basketball-sized nest was hidden inside the hollow of a tree, in woods two hours north of Seattle, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first nest of the 2-inch-long, venomous insects \u2014 real name \u201cAsian giant hornets\u201d \u2014 to be successfully located after almost a year of worrisome individual sightings near the British Columbia border.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s effort began with the trapping of three hornets \u2014 and the task of keeping them alive with strawberry jam long enough for the next steps.<\/p>\n<p>Entomologists then used dental floss to tie tiny radio tracking devices to their abdomens.<\/p>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>The hornets then had to be tracked back to their nest, which was well-hidden inside the cavity of a tree.<\/p>\n<p>One bug was lost entirely in the process, causing some concern.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the hornets have venomous, 6-millimeter-long stingers, entomologists had to dress in thick protective suits for the next part.<\/p>\n<p>They sealed the cavity with foam, covered it with plastic wrap, and then inserted a tube inside to suck the buggers out into a collection chamber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe extract them alive,\u201d explained state entomologist Erik Spichiger. \u201cWe will kill them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tree will next be cut down in order to extract and kill the larvae and, ideally, find the queen \u2014 so long as she hasn\u2019t high-tailed it out of there already to start a new hive.<\/p>\n<p>The murder hornets \u2014 named for their ability to decimate a hive of bees in a matter of hours \u2014 first appeared near Blaine in Washington state in December, 2019. They have destroyed six or seven hives in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The species is normally found in China and other Asian countries, where their stings kill about a dozen people a year.
