“#College student fatally shot was on ‘dream trip<\/a>’ to NYC: dad<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The young visitor from Indiana who was killed by a stray bullet in Brooklyn early Saturday would have wanted his shooter to know \u201che\u2019s already forgiven them,\u201d his devastated dad told The Post.<\/p>\n

Ethan Williams, a 20-year-old college student from Indianapolis had been on a \u201cdream trip\u201d to New York and was sitting on a stoop with a group of friends outside their Airbnb in Bushwick when he was shot in the chest around 2:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

Police believe was an unintended target of gunfire in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthan would have wanted the shooter to know he\u2019s already forgiven them,\u201d his father, Jason Williams, said in a phone interview on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would have wanted to be his friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan spent his life trying to give back to others, including by doing missionary work with orphans in Rwanda while in high school, the dad said.<\/p>\n

While in high school, Ethan also started an LGBTQ club, though he wasn\u2019t gay, because he was tired of seeing his classmates get bullied, his dad said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to express how much he loved everybody,\u201d Williams said. \u201cHe did not know a stranger.\u201d<\/p>\n

As just a third-grader, Ethan stood up for another child being pushed around on their school bus, telling his parent \u201cI don\u2019t like to see other kids marginalized,\u201d his dad recalled.<\/p>\n

A sophomore in the film media<\/a> program Indiana University, Ethan \u201cwanted people\u2019s stories to be told.\u201d<\/p>\n

He had a stint on the mayor\u2019s youth council in Indianapolis, where he worked on such issues as poverty and violence, and was considering a career in journalism, Williams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said people shouldn\u2019t be defined by their worst moments,\u201d the distraught dad said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted to make the world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n

At just 3 or 4 years old, Ethan became \u201cobsessed\u201d with the Big App<\/a>le after watching \u201cSpider-Man,\u201d and had dreamed of coming for a visit.<\/p>\n

Stressed out by his studies this fall, he decided to finally come into town to film skateboarding videos and spend time with his best friends, his dad said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was so excited to see New York. He wanted to meet people like he\u2019d seen on TV,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n

The group had gotten into the city on Thursday and planned to be in town until Monday or Tuesday \u2014 but tragedy struck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey felt like they were grown ups and they found this place and felt they\u2019d be fine,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just wrong place, wrong time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family, including Ethan\u2019s mother and younger brother and sister, are \u201cutterly broken,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n

He thanked the NYPD for its sensitivity, adding he expects Ethan\u2019s body to sent back to Indianapolis by next week for the burial.<\/p>\n

In a prepared statement, the family asked for anyone with information about the shooting of \u201cour beautiful son\u201d to come forward and help in the investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he had the opportunity to say something to the shooter, we know that he would invite him for a cup of coffee and ask to hear their story,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe would forgive without delay. Ethan always saw beyond the surface and took the time to help others feel seen, important and loved.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family appreciates the outpouring of support,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask for privacy while we grieve and focus on figuring out what the world will look like without Ethan.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
