{"id":97146,"date":"2020-10-25T01:39:33","date_gmt":"2020-10-24T22:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/richard-carranzas-grading-policy-will-bar-failing-marks-nyc-doe\/"},"modified":"2020-10-25T01:39:33","modified_gmt":"2020-10-24T22:39:33","slug":"richard-carranzas-grading-policy-will-bar-failing-marks-nyc-doe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/richard-carranzas-grading-policy-will-bar-failing-marks-nyc-doe\/","title":{"rendered":"#Richard Carranza&#8217;s grading policy will bar failing marks: NYC DOE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Richard Carranza&#8217;s grading policy will bar failing marks: NYC DOE<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        Chancellor Richard Carranza\u2019s highly anticipated new grading policy for this school year will again ban failing marks, according to an internal memo obtained by The Post, riling educators and parents.<\/p>\n<p>The city Department of Education document, titled \u201cGrading Policy 2020-2021,\u201d says schools should use the same softer \u201cconsiderations\u201d adopted last May during the COVID-19 shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>Among the main guidelines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cContinue to use \u2018course in progress\u2019 in place of failing grades.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPermit students in high school an additional semester to complete coursework and meet the learning outcomes for their courses.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under the DOE policy adopted in May, schools had to drop numeric grades. The Mayor and Chancellor have yet to meet that urgent challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some parents agree the DOE is watering down the standards to cover-up its own failures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DOE is running away from an honest assessment of how far behind students are right now. Hiding the evidence does not help kids who need the most help,\u201d said Maud Maron, a Manhattan mom of five kids in public schools and a member of Community Education Council in District 2. \u201cThis policy is about protecting adults.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOE has not only kept parents in the dark about grading policy, but hamstrung principals and teachers. Parent conferences are coming up this month.<\/p>\n<p>A Brooklyn principal told The Post his middle school is using its own grading policy and plans to \u201cignore\u201d any guidance from Carranza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re focusing on daily participation, homework, tests and quizzes,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to fail them if they don\u2019t participate at all or do any work. We have high expectations. The DOE has low expectations. They didn\u2019t just lower the bar.
