\n White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Sunday defended Vice President Mike Pence for continuing to hit the campaign trail after five of his aides tested positive for the coronavirus \u2014 saying he is \u201cessential personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n

CNN\u2019s Jake Tapp<\/a>er noted that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines call for Pence to be quarantined for 14 days and questioned why he is still continuing to criss-cross the country campaigning.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually he\u2019s not just campaigning, he\u2019s working. We saw a Middle East peace agreement with Sudan in the Oval Office that the President engaged in,\u201d Meadows said on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union,\u201d<\/a> referring to last week\u2019s announcement that Sudan and Israel will normalize relations.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd for anybody to suggest that the president has been out campaigning and not getting things done, all you have to do is look at the facts,\u201d Meadows said.<\/p>\n

He said Pence is actually considered an essential worker and will continue to make campaign appearances.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not saying he\u2019s not campaigning. I\u2019m saying that is only part of what he\u2019s doing,\u201d Meadows said of Trump. \u201cAs we look at that, essential personnel, whether it\u2019s the vice president of the United States or anyone else, has to continue on.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he talked to Pence and the vice president reassured him that he is taking precautions at the rallies after the aides, including chief of staff Marc Short and senior adviser Marty Obst, tested positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can tell you that what he\u2019s doing is wearing a mask, social<\/a>ly distancing and when he goes up to speak he will take the mask off, put it back on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Corey Lewandowski, an adviser to the Trump campaign, also said he was sure Pence was taking the necessary precautions \u2013 and compared them with those taken by Joe Biden\u2019s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have also seen Kamala Harris\u2019 team come down with Covid and she took the necessary precautions,\u201d Lewandowski said on NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her campaign halted travel<\/a> for four days after two of her staffers were diagnosed with the coronavirus.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
