“#Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw one win away from elusive World Series<\/a> title<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Baseball\u2019s model franchise for most of the last decade has accomplished everything except win the World Series, but here are the Dodgers on the brink of vanquishing those ghosts.<\/p>\n

The first crack will come Tuesday night. If they need a mulligan, there is Wednesday. It\u2019s a nice spot for the National League champions in their pursuit of ending the \u201cwait \u2019til next year\u201d chatter begotten by the franchise\u2019s Brooklyn forefathers. The Dodgers haven\u2019t won it all since 1988.<\/p>\n

Two home runs, a strong Clayton Kershaw start and dominant relief allowed the Dodgers to rebound from the previous night\u2019s calamity and beat the Rays 4-2 on Sunday in Game<\/a> 5 of the World Series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.<\/p>\n

This victory for the Dodgers (putting them ahead 3-2 in the series) came a night after they lost a wild Game 4, with Randy Arozarena scoring the winning run after stumbling between third base and home, as catcher Will Smith mishandled the throw, after Chris Taylor committed an error in the outfield on Brett Phillips\u2019 RBI single that had tied it.<\/p>\n

But Smith was confident before Sunday\u2019s game the Dodgers would respond to the latest challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast series against the Braves we were down 3-1,\u201d Smith said. \u201cWe are still pretty confident we\u2019re the best team in baseball and we\u2019re going to win this thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kershaw, whose 189 career postseason innings are the most by any pitcher without a World Series title, lasted into the sixth, facing 21 batters, as was manager Dave Roberts\u2019 plan. Kershaw allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 5 \u00b2\/\u2083 innings, departing after 85 pitches. Dustin May replaced Kershaw and got four outs before lefty Victor Gonzalez escaped the eighth, leaving the tying runs on base. Blake Treinen earned the save with a scoreless ninth, leaving Kenley Jansen in the bullpen after he took the loss with two runs allowed in the ninth on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Max Muncy became the ninth Dodgers player to homer in the series, unloading against Tyler Glasnow in the fifth to put the Rays in a 4-2 hole. The run was the Dodgers\u2019 59th with two outs in the postseason, extending the club record.<\/p>\n

Joc Pederson\u2019s homer in the third had extended the Dodgers\u2019 lead to 3-0. Pederson\u2019s blast gave him a homer in each of the Dodgers\u2019 last three World Series app<\/a>earances.<\/p>\n

Corey Seager\u2019s RBI single in the first got the Dodgers started, following Mookie Betts\u2019 leadoff double. But Seager\u2019s legs also provided a spark, as he advanced to third on two wild pitches by Glasnow that didn\u2019t stray far from catcher Mike Zunino. Cody Bellinger\u2019s infield single brought in Seager, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Glasnow lasted five innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts, three walks and three wild pitches (a World Series record). It was a second straight shaky start for Glasnow, who surrendered six earned runs over 4 \u00b9\/\u2083 innings in Game 1.<\/p>\n

Both runs against Kershaw scored in the fourth. Yandy Diaz stroked an RBI trip<\/a>le after Kevin Kiermaier\u2019s leadoff infield single. Arozarena delivered an RBI single that brought the Rays within 3-2. But the Dodgers escaped further trouble when Arozarena was thrown out attempting to steal second to end the inning on Brandon Lowe\u2019s strikeout. <\/p>\n

The Rays got creative in trying to tie the game in the fourth. With two outs, Manuel Margot broke from third in a straight steal of home and was thrown out by Kershaw on a close play. Margot had walked leading off the inning and stole second, reaching third when Taylor misplayed Austin Barnes\u2019 throw.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
