“#Pretending NYPD can’t police the polls fairly is beyond contemptible<\/strong>”

\n There\u2019s been no shortage of baseless accusations and bizarre conspiracy theories hurled at New York City police officers these past few months, but last week\u2019s installment reached a new level of absurdity.<\/p>\n

The latest lunacy \u2014 coming without a shred of evidence to back it up \u2014 is that police officers cannot be trusted to perform our duties impartially this election season because we\u2019re supporting President Trump.<\/p>\n

Please. The idea of police officers trying to skew election results to our preferred candidate \u2014 or refusing to take our posts if he loses \u2014 would be laughable if it wasn\u2019t so insulting.<\/p>\n

Have any of the people floating this theory even visited a New York City poll site? Have they ever seen the police officers posted there exhibiting anything but the utmost professionalism, ensuring that every New Yorker can cast a ballot in peace and safety?<\/p>\n

They haven\u2019t. And they won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Police officers performing poll duty is nothing new. Neither is the idea of police unions \u2014 or any other union \u2014 endorsing political candidates. Both things happ<\/a>en every single year. In past years, the PBA\u2019s endorsements have included many Democrats, and questions about police officers\u2019 impartiality on Election Day never, ever came up.<\/p>\n

But we\u2019re talking about them now because Mayor de Blasio and the NYPD gave foolish answers to loaded questions at two separate press conferences last week, falling over themselves to give reassurances that cops will \u201cleave their politics at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course we will \u2014 so why not simply reject the premise of the question altogether, as the mayor loves to do? Maybe because it takes the spotlight away from their own failed, politically motivated decisions.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t the cops who decided to approach this summer\u2019s protests with no plan other than to \u201cuse a light touch.\u201d It wasn\u2019t the cops who decided to slash the NYPD budget and headcount.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t the cops who decided to turn the Police Department into a political football \u2014 one that keeps getting kicked further and further from the realities of crime and disorder on our streets.<\/p>\n

City Hall and 1 Police Plaza did those things. But rather than answering tough questions about their own failures, the mayor is dabbling in make-believe, \u201cfighting back\u201d against the unhinged fantasy of police officers interfering with an election, so that he can pat himself on the back when that doesn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n

Back here on Planet Earth, police officers know that we have a job to do. We know that we must do our job regardless of our political leadership. Let\u2019s be honest: If we didn\u2019t do our job, regardless of the politics, this city would have collapsed a long time ago.<\/p>\n

So this year, we will once again report to your local schools, rec centers and senior centers at 4 o\u2019clock in the morning.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll spend a long day standing our posts as the voters file through. It\u2019s not an exciting assignment, but it\u2019s important to us.<\/p>\n

Why? Because when our tour finally ends, we\u2019ll change out of our uniforms and head to our own polling places to vote for the candidates of our choice. Just like you did.<\/p>\n

The rights we protect for you are our rights, too. We will defend them faithfully.<\/p>\n
