They are often long, complicated, and mired in obtuse legalese, as if deliberately designed to confuse users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So by clicking \u201cagree,\u201d you\u2019re consenting for your data to be traded for a service, without really understanding what exactly you\u2019re signing up for. This also means the company has the right to collect, store, and process your data as quid pro quo for the service it offers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Plus, it doesn\u2019t help that India doesn\u2019t have a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/internetfreedom\/status\/1317833076760735745\">comprehensive data protection law<\/a><span> like GDPR, thereby making it easy for private companies to overstep their bounds with regards to data collection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In response to the complaint, Airtel characterized the incident as a \u201cclerical error\u201d, but not before <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airtel.in\/privacy-policy\/\">revising its privacy policy<\/a><span> to state that it doesn\u2019t hoover personal information relating to genetic data, religious or political beliefs, health, or sexual orientation. <\/span><em>For now<\/em><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe generic content of the definitions of what constitutes personal data as laid down by the IT Act are expansive, which had been inadvertently put on to our website,\u201d the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gadgets.ndtv.com\/internet\/news\/airtel-privacy-policy-outrage-twitter-user-data-protection-bill-2311575\">company said<\/a><span> in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Privacy policies need to be simplified, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le is taking a big step to address this with its <\/span>privacy label approach<span> for third-party apps. But it\u2019s still in its infancy and is limited to the iOS ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Until then, make sure you take the time to read those privacy policies and terms of service agreements. Trust me, it\u2019s worth all the hassle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"h2 mso-font\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_trending_in_security\"><\/span><span>What\u2019s trending in security?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>The US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Japan make renewed calls for <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/international-statement-end-end-encryption-and-public-safety\">encryption backdoors<\/a><span>, Microsoft and an alliance of cybersecurity companies took down <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2020\/10\/20\/trickbot-ransomware-disruption-update\/\">TrickBot malware infratsructure<\/a><span>, and Zoom officially gains support for <\/span>end-to-end encryption<span> in video calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<span>Vietnamese state-sponsored hackers, aka \u201cOceanLotus,\u201d have been linked to a cyberespionage campaign that involved spying on dissidents for years. [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/montysthree-industrial-espionage\/98972\/\">Kaspersky<\/a><span>]<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>Zoom is officially beginning to roll out <\/span>end-to-end encryption<span> in video calls. But you will have turn it on manually. [<\/span>TNW<span>]<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>In July, French authorities took down <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/3aza95\/how-police-took-over-encrochat-hacked\">Encrochat<\/a><span>, an encrypted phone network used almost exclusively by criminals, by deploying malware on thousands of devices and eavesdropping on the messages exchanged between criminal suspects. But the hack is now facing a new legal challenge, including whether the messages gathered using the malware is in fact admissible as evidence. [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/7k9z7x\/encrochat-hack-illegal-defense-nca\">Motherboard<\/a><span>]<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>Google said it delivered over 33,000 alerts to its users during the first three quarters of 2020 to warn them of state-sponsored phishing attacks targeting their accounts. [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/g5pznq\/apple-is-poaching-from-googles-iphone-hacking-team\">Motherboard<\/a><span>]<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned that cyberbaddies are chaining multiple security vulnerabilities to compromise IT networks and applications. [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/us-cert.cisa.gov\/ncas\/alerts\/aa20-283a\">CISA<\/a><span>]<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<span>The US government charged 6 Russian military intelligence officers for carrying out some of the \u201cmost disruptive and destructive series of computer attacks ever attributed to a single group.\u201d [<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thehackernews.com\/2020\/10\/russian-hackers.html\">The Hacker News<\/a><span>]<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<li>T<span>he last fortnight in data breaches, leaks and ransomware: <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/barnes-and-noble-hit-by-egregor-ransomware-strange-data-leaked\/\">Barnes &amp; Noble<\/a><span>, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/crytek-hit-by-egregor-ransomware-ubisoft-data-leaked\/\">Crytek<\/a><span>, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/document-signing-service-docsketch-discloses-security-breach\/\">Docsketch<\/a><span>, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/10\/08\/dr-lal-pathlabs-exposed-patient-lab-data\/\">Dr Lal PathLabs<\/a><span>, and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/software-ag-it-giant-hit-with-23-million-ransom-by-clop-ransomware\/\">Software AG<\/a><span>.<\/span>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"h2 mso-font\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Data_Point\"><\/span>Data Point<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>As data breaches continue to become the norm, Verizon\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.verizon.com\/resources\/reports\/2020-data-breach-investigations-report.pdf\">2020 Data Breach Report<\/a><span> summarized 3,950 confirmed incidents spanning across 81 countries. It found 45% of the breaches involved hacking, while errors and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> engineering attacks made up 22% of the attacks. What\u2019s more, 70% of the breaches were perpetrated by external actors, with organized crime groups behind 55% of the attacks.
