Email can overwhelm you with unimportant messages. Sometimes, though, you really need to know when a certain message hits your Inbox. Fortunately, you can set up custom alerts in Microsoft Outlook to make sure you don\u2019t miss the messages that are most important.<\/p>\n

To set up custom alerts, we\u2019re going to create a rule in Outlook on a desktop computer. This method, unfortunately, won\u2019t work in the Outlook web app<\/a>; if you use that, you\u2019ll just have to\u00a0keep your inbox as clear as possible.<\/p>\n

After you open Microsoft Outlook on your computer, click Home > Rules > Manage Rules & Alerts.<\/p>\n

Click \u201cNew Rule.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

In the \u201cRules Wizard\u201d window, select the \u201cApply Rule on Messages I Receive\u201d checkbox, and then click \u201cNext.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Select<\/p>\n

You can choose any conditions you want. We\u2019re going to set up an alert for emails from a specific address. To do so, we select the \u201cFrom People or Public Group\u201d checkbox, and then click \u201cPeople or Public Group\u201d in the bottom box.<\/p>\n

You can then select a contact from your address book or type the email address, and then click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Click \u201cNext.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

Scroll through the options and select the \u201cDisplay a Specific Message in the New Item Alert Window\u201d checkbox. Then, click \u201cA Specific Message\u201d in the bottom box.<\/p>\n

\"Select<\/p>\n

Type the message you want to be displayed. You can use emoji if you want, so we\u2019ve added two rotating emergency service lights to alert us when a message is important. After you type your message, click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Click \u201cFinish\u201d in the \u201cRules Wizard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

In the confirmation dialog box that appears, click \u201cOK.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

Click \u201cOK\u201d once again to close the \u201cRules and Alerts\u201d window, and you\u2019re all set!<\/p>\n

This rule will now apply whenever an email from the address you typed arrives in your inbox. It will display an alert, even if you\u2019ve turned off desktop alerts.<\/p>\n

An alert will remain visible until you close it. If an email arrives while you\u2019re away, you\u2019ll still see it when you return to your computer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
