If Quibi wasn\u2019t a brilliant experiment in streaming television, it certainly was a bold one. Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman thought Quibi and its \u201cquick bites\u201d of content were the future of television\u2014the startup was even called NewTV at first\u2014but the $2 billion venture couldn\u2019t cut it in the streaming wars.<\/p>\n

Katzenberg and Whitman confirmed on October 22 that Quibi will be shutting down after just six months, with a customer support article<\/a> citing December 1 as the streaming platform\u2019s last day online.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuibi was a big idea and there was no one who wanted to make a success of it more than we did,\u201d Katzenberg and Whitman wrote in an open letter<\/a> on Medium. \u201cOur failure was not for lack of trying; we\u2019ve considered and exhausted every option available to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The duo speculated that Quibi didn\u2019t succeed \u201cbecause the idea itself wasn\u2019t strong enough to justify a standalone streaming service or because of our timing\u201d\u2014or, perhaps, a combination of the two.<\/p>\n

Still, Katzenberg and Whitman did do some things right. Here\u2019s a recap of their successes\u2014including Quibi\u2019s celebrity roster, its Emmy victories, and even its eleventh-hour move to TV sets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
