And the thing about writers is that they\u2019re always searching for something to make\u00a0it easier. And that\u2019s where Astrohaus\u2019 Freewrite <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel<\/a>er comes in.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lots_of_words_I_dont_recognize_there_Astrohaus_Freewrite_Traveler\"><\/span>Lots of words I don\u2019t recognize there. Astrohaus?\u00a0Freewrite Traveler?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Well, aren\u2019t you demanding? But I\u2019ll tell you.<\/p>\n<p>Astrohaus is an American company that makes productivity tools. You open up the lid and start typing. There are no <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s, no browser: just you and a text editor. And your thoughts. Your awful, harrowing thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Freewrite Traveler does connect to WiFi, but that\u2019s only for syncing purposes. The device can connect with\u00a0Evernote, Google, and Dropbox, as well as its propriety Postbox system. This means your documents are backed up and synced.<\/p>\n<p>And it works well. It\u2019s an absolute joy to use and is up there with the best non-mechanical typing experiences I\u2019ve ever had. The keys are that perfect balance between firm and spongy, the spacing is perfect. It feels luxurious and precise.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of dedicated arrow keys is a bit annoying, although you can use a function button and WASD to mimic these. I also found the lag between pressing a key and it appearing on the e-ink screen irritating, but I got over that eventually.<\/p>\n<p>And this is just the beginning of the problems.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_sort_of_problems\"><\/span>What sort of problems?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s talk more about the Freewrite Traveler\u2019s e-ink screen \u2014 one of its main marketing points.<\/p>\n<p>First up, the size. Although it\u2019s not a deal-breaker, I wish it was a little wider. The way it sits in the middle of this wide space feels awkward and is a missed opportunity for some more word real estate.<\/p>\n<p>Far more concerning though is the lack of a backlight.<\/p>\n<p>The e-ink display looks crisp in decent daylight,\u00a0but becomes tricky to read in much less. Basically, it\u2019s not really functional in any sort of \u201cmood lighting\u201d \u2014 a concept independent caf\u00e9 visitors will be familiar with.<\/p>\n<p>I truly don\u2019t understand\u00a0<em>why\u00a0<\/em>Astrohaus didn\u2019t include a backlight on the Freewrite Traveler. It makes no sense to me.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Battery_life_maybe\"><\/span>Battery life maybe?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Potentially, but any battery life losses would be an overall usability gain. A backlight is such a basic bit of functionality and there\u2019s really no reason not to include one.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"While_were_on_the_topic_of_battery_life%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>While we\u2019re on the topic of battery life\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yeah, the Freewrite Traveler\u2019s battery life is amazing. I\u2019ve had it the review unit about two weeks and haven\u2019t had to charge it yet. If you have an outline you want to turn into prose, it\u2019s an excellent tool. Like I said, the only negative on this front is the lag between typing and it appearing on the screen \u2014 but that\u2019s expected and easily adapted to.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is there\u2019s more to writing than putting words on the page.<\/p>\n<p>When I\u2019m working on a piece of creative long form, I begin by outlining chapters in bullet points. As the story evolves, I\u2019m constantly jumping back to these,\u00a0adding detail and tweaking elements.<\/p>\n<p>Once this is done I\u2019ll turn it into prose \u2014 the stage I\u2019d use the Freewrite Traveler for.<\/p>\n<p>After this is when the real editing begins. The shifting of paragraphs, the removal of scenes, the tweaking of sentences \u2014 all nimble operations. And ones\u00a0the Freewrite Traveler is unable to achieve.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"That_doesnt_sound_great%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>That doesn\u2019t sound great\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Potentially, but Astrohaus is clear on its website that the Freewrite range is\u00a0<em>not<\/em> an editing tool. This is a device that has a specific purpose: drafting.<\/p>\n<p>And you know what? It does that well. It does it damn well.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_there_a_%E2%80%9Cbut%E2%80%9D_coming%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Is there a \u201cbut\u201d coming\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u2026but it\u2019s too damn expensive for such a specific tool.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_does_the_Freewrite_Traveler_cost\"><\/span>How much does the\u00a0Freewrite Traveler cost?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s selling for $599.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Goddamn_599\"><\/span>Goddamn, $599?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Yeah. I really love the machine. But this is really a $200-300 bit of hardware. At that price, I could overlook many of its issues. And it does have issues.<\/p>\n<p>The unlit e-ink screen makes\u00a0navigating through menus irritating and editing almost impossible. The casing around the machine feels decidedly non-premium. And it\u2019s only really useful for maybe 20% of the whole writing process. And that\u2019s being generous.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the rub though: I like it. If it was around the $250 mark\u00a0I\u2019d be in the queue to buy one, but more than double that? Nah, no thanks.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whos_the_Freewrite_Traveler_for\"><\/span>Who\u2019s the Freewrite Traveler for?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019d say three things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you a writer who\u2019s struggling to get words on the page?<\/li>\n<li>Do you already have a good computer?<\/li>\n<li>And do you have lots of spare cash?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you answered yes to those three points, then the Freewrite Traveler is for you.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you just answered yes to the first question? And you\u2019re really looking for something to kickstart your prose? Well, I\u2019d recommend you get a laptop and emulate the Freewrite experience \u2014 and there are lots of ways.<\/p>\n<p>You could get a distraction-free word processor, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ia.net\/writer\">like\u00a0iA Writer<\/a>.<span>\u00a0You could experiment with things like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pomodoro_Technique\">the pomodoro technique<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>You could set up a separate user on your laptop for writing and remove every app but your essentials.<\/p>\n<p>This is my point: there are lots of things you can do before shelling out $600. The\u00a0Freewrite Traveler is a luxury tool, not an essential one.<\/p>\n<p>And you know what? Saying this hurts.
