\n Election watch: Ignore Early Returns<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t try to divine election results from early voting returns,\u201d advises RealClearPolitics\u2019 Sean Trende<\/a>. He said the same thing in 2016, when pundits also pointed to \u201cDemocrats\u2019 massive lead in early voting\u201d to predict a Hillary Clinton win. In North Carolina, for example, \u201cDemocrats have a 10.5-percentage-point lead over Republicans in early voting.\u201d Yet Dems had \u201ca 13.1-percentage-point lead there\u201d four years ago \u2014 and lost the state. As it is, early-voting data point in contradictory directions, with the black share of the electorate down, while independents and some GOPers sour on the president. Bottom line: There\u2019s nothing to do but \u201cwait eight more days.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: An Existential Choice<\/strong><\/p>\n

At The American Conservative, Jon Schweppe declares<\/a>: \u201cAmerica is on the ballot this election. Vote for the Republicans, if you love your country. Vote for the Democrats, if you\u2019d rather see it burn to the ground.\u201d Over the past year, the left has shown that it truly believes the \u201cAmerican system is rotten to the core and needs to be done away with.\u201d That\u2019s the message of The New York Times\u2019 1619 project and the Black Lives Matters \u00adrioters burning US cities, often with open Democratic app<\/a>roval. If they succeed on Nov. 3, \u201cnothing we traditionally call American\u201d would endure.<\/p>\n

Fiscal hawk: Localities Can\u2019t Rely on Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEven before COVID-19,\u201d observes Brian Chen at City Journal<\/a>, \u201cmany states and cities\u201d were just a \u201cdownturn away from fiscal calamity.\u201d They counted on population growth to finance their budgets, yet that growth had stalled even before the pandemic and lockdowns: \u201cThe Congressional Budget Office has consistently revised population projections down in recent years.\u201d New York City, in particular, is now seeing \u201chigh-earning residents fleeing,\u201d and its \u201coutlook isn\u2019t rosy.\u201d Nor can states and cities can\u2019t expect federal bailouts. Instead, they need to build up their \u201cstabilization funds\u201d and reduce \u201cunfunded pension liabilities.\u201d More fundamentally, they will have to cut their \u201cdependence\u201d on growth \u201cfor basic fiscal solvency\u201d \u2014 or face service cuts, tax hikes, \u201clong-lasting economic destabilization\u201d and \u201ceven slower growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fact-check: Lesley Stahl\u2019s Lies<\/strong><\/p>\n

At The Federalist, Margot Cleveland corrects<\/a> Lesley Stahl, who falsely claimed during her \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview with President Trump that it\u2019s \u201cunverified\u201d that the Obama administration spied on the Trump campaign. In reality: \u201cNearly a year ago, the 478-page report issued by Inspector General<\/a> Michael Horowitz verified spying on the Trump campaign\u201d via deceptive and flawed Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrants to monitor adviser Carter Page and his communications with other campaign officials. The FBI also \u201cran\u201d a regular source, academic Stefan Halper, at Page, at George Papadopoulos and at Sam Clovis, the campaign\u2019s national co-chair, having Halper ask multiple campaign-related questions. Finally, the FBI sent a member of its Russiagate team to a security briefing for Trump and Gen. Mike Flynn \u201cto \u2018assess\u2019 Flynn in anticipation of a \u2018subject interview,\u2019\u200a\u201d the IG found \u2014 with notes on the two men\u2019s comments entered into the case-management database. In short, \u201cStahl and the rest of corporate media<\/a>\u201d are \u201clying to Americans\u201d about a huge scandal.<\/p>\n

Conservative: Big Grassroots Support for Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Saturday, some 2,000 cars lined up on Pennsylvania\u2019s Interstate 70 for a \u201cTrump Train\u201d \u2014 \u201cthe biggest political rally no one saw\u201d and just one of gatherings like it that \u201chave been happening for months in some of the places President Trump needs most to win if he is to be re-elected,\u201d reports the Washington Examiner\u2019s Byron York<\/a>. Many attendees work oil and gas jobs, and they know that Trump \u201chas supported their industry while . . . Joe Biden wanted to cripple and ultimately eliminate it.\u201d Trump is down in the Pennsylvania polls, but he managed to pull off a surprise win there four years ago. If that happens again, \u201che might well owe his victory to his grassroots supporters\u2019 work on the road,\u201d particularly in \u201coil and gas country.\u201d The Trump Train might just \u201ckeep driving all the way to Election Day\u201d and return him to the White House. \u2014 Compiled by The Post Editorial Board\n <\/div>\n
