\n CD Projekt Red today announced it\u2019s much-ballyhooed, highly anticipated RPG,\u00a0Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>, is being delayed for the \u2014 what, third or fourth time? I\u2019ve lost track at this point. Anyone else sensing something rotten in Night City?<\/p>\n

The company revealed the news in yet another apologetic Twitter<\/a> post, saying the purpose of the delay is to continue to get the game ready in some nebulous fashion. The only specifics we got were that the developers are swamped trying to get the game ready both on current-gen and next-gen consoles.<\/p>\n

I would like to take this moment to remind everyone that CDPR has been saying the game was \u201ccomplete and playable\u201d since its original delay was announced\u2026 in\u00a0January<\/em>. The game has since gone gold and it\u2019s somehow still being delayed. In case you don\u2019t know, a game going gold means the master copy of the disc has been created, and thus the game is ready for physical release. So they\u2019ve already created the release edition of the game, and yet it\u2019s\u00a0still\u00a0<\/em>not finished.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m aware that, in this day and age, games come with massive patches on release. But if the version of the game that\u2019s been printed to the master disc is so screwed up that you need 21 more days of development time before it can\u00a0even be seen by the public, there\u2019s a problem.\u00a0Cyberpunk 2077\u00a0<\/em>has been in\u00a0development for over eight years at this\u00a0point \u2014 sure, it\u2019s not been regular\u00a0development, but it\u2019s still been in the\u00a0works for quite some time. For\u00a0CD\u00a0Projekt\u00a0Red to\u00a0keep kicking the can further down the road\u2026 something just feels wrong about this.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t just me talking out of school. Behind the scenes info from Jason Schreier says the development staff only found out about the delay from an internal email sent at the same time as the above announcement.\u00a0Despite my initial hopes, these multiple delays have not resulted in less crunch. In fact, according to a Bloomberg expose<\/a>, crunch is alive and well. That means CDPR staff may have only just found out today they have to endure\u00a0three more weeks<\/em> of this, with some allegedly having 100-hour work weeks<\/a>. But yeah sure, take your time, CDPR \u2014 nothing sketchy or unhealthy about this at all.<\/p>\n

The present (and hopefully final) release date is now December 10.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
