John David Washington<\/strong> is having a killer year. After becoming the breakout star of\u00a0Spike Lee\u2019s BlaKkKlansman<\/em> in 2018, Washington nabbed a role in the Christopher Nolan tentpole\u00a0Tenet<\/em><\/strong>, which hit theaters (to somewhat divisive results both critically and commercially) this year. And now Washington is continuing that killing streak with a thriller produced by\u00a0Luca Guadagnino<\/strong>,\u00a0Born to Be Murdered<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>which has just been picked up by Netflix.<\/p>\n

According to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, Netflix has acquired the global rights to\u00a0Born to Be Murdered<\/em>, a thriller starring John David Washington and produced by Luca Guadagnino that is set to be the English-language debut of director Ferdinando Cito Filomarino<\/strong>, who worked as a second unit director on Guadagnino\u2019s Call Me By Your Name<\/em>, A Bigger Splash\u201d<\/em> and Suspiria<\/em>. Alicia Vikander<\/strong> (Earthquake Bird<\/em>),\u00a0Boyd Holbrook<\/strong> (Logan<\/em>), and Vicky Krieps<\/strong> (Phantom Thread<\/em>) are also set to star.
\nWritten by Kevin Rice<\/strong>,\u00a0Born to be Murdered<\/em> is set in Athens and the Epirus region of Greece and follows \u201ca vacationing couple, played by Washington and Vikander, who fall prey to a violent conspiracy with tragic consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The movie\u2019s got a vague synopsis but a great title that recalls that of Alfred Hitchcock suspense films. It\u2019s too general<\/a> a descript<\/a>ion to really be certain that\u00a0Born to Be Murdered<\/em> takes cues from Hitchcock, but that\u2019s what I\u2019m deciding, since Hitchcock is seeing renewed appreciation \u2014 both as a source of inspiration (see:\u00a0Parasite<\/em>, etc.) and in our ongoing rebootmania, with Netflix\u2019s recent adaptation of\u00a0Rebecca<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Guadagnino is producing\u00a0Born to Be Murdered<\/em>\u00a0along with and Morabito for their Frenesy Films, as well as Francesco Melzi d\u2019Eril and Gabriele Moratti for MeMo with Raicinema. Rodrigo Teixeira is executive producing for RT Features. While this is set to be Filomarino\u2019s English-language debut, the filmmaker (who is related to Italian\u00a0auteur Luchio Visconti) already made his feature directorial debut with the 2015 biopic\u00a0Antonia<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And\u00a0Filomarino has quite a line-up for his first English-language film. Washington, like I noted before, is having a banner year \u2014 having recently starred in Nolan\u2019s\u00a0Tenet<\/em>, and will be seen soon in the upcoming\u00a0Malcolm & Marie<\/em> opposite Zendaya, which was filmed in quarantine and also acquired by Netflix. washington has also recently joined the cast of David O. Russell\u2019s next film opposite Margot Robbie and Christian Bale. Vikander, Holbrook, and Krieps are all solid talents, with Krieps especially impressing in\u00a0Phantom Thread<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Netflix is planning a release for\u00a0Born to Be Murdered<\/em>\u00a0in 2021.
