\n Media<\/a> desk: Creating a Costly COVID Narrative<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cnews<\/a> media can still be a very formidable force\u201d when \u201cthere is a panic, the subject is unfamiliar to the masses and they speak with a general<\/a>ly uniform voice,\u201d notes John Ziegler at Mediaite<\/a>. The pandemic gave the prestige press the opportunity to shape a \u201cpolitically deadly\u201d view of President Trump \u2014 and they\u2019ve \u201ctaken full advantage of it,\u201d though it has \u201cunnecessarily cost our children very dearly.\u201d The press, ignoring America\u2019s \u201cfar better rate of deaths per cases\u201d than many similar countries, is \u201ccementing the perception\u201d that Trump\u2019s COVID-19 response \u201chas been a disaster.\u201d Harsh lockdowns in states such as Michigan are hurting Trump politically, \u201cbecause a portion of the population there, thanks to the media narrative, has determined that their governor\u2019s punishing actions were required due to Trump\u2019s ineptitude.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: US Democracy\u2019s Not at Risk<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOur toxic partisan swamp just gets worse if liberals join conservatives in believing that the opposition party is ready to literally destroy the \u00adnation,\u201d Kevin Drum cautions at Mother Jones<\/a>. \u201cAmerica has had gerrymandering, the Senate, the Electoral College and the Supreme Court since the beginning, and liberals rarely worried that they were an existential threat to democracy.\u201d Indeed, \u201cevery democratic country has institutions that get in the way of perfect representation, and this is often considered a good thing: the Senate as a counterweight to the passions of the House, for example, or the Supreme Court as the guarantor of the rights of the minority versus the will of the majority.\u201d Just \u201cstop whining and, \u00adinstead, do the hard work of winning more votes in more places.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: Joe, the Endless-War Candidate<\/strong><\/p>\n

Liberal interventionists and GOP neocons are salivating at the prospect of a Joe Biden presidency, warns Daniel McCarthy at Spectator USA<\/a>, for the ex-veep \u201cpersonifies the foreign policy of endless war.\u201d Biden voted \u201cfor the biggest and most foolish intervention\u201d of the post-9\/11 era \u2014 the Iraq War \u2014 and never repudiated it. Before that, he supported the 1999 Serbia intervention. Biden was supposed to be \u201cone of the less hawkish members\u201d of Team Obama, but Barack Obama \u201chimself was less hawkish than Biden, however \u2014 and he still chose to go to war in Libya.\u201d Bottom line: Americans who hope to end the endless wars must pull for Trump.<\/p>\n

Free-speech watch: Censorship Threatens Unity<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Facebook and Twitter moved \u201cto suppress\u201d The Post\u2019s Hunter Biden stories, writes William Voegeli at City Journal<\/a>, it fueled \u201ca larger \u00addebate about the power of social-media platforms.\u201d Are rules \u201cabout what can and can\u2019t be said clear and universally app<\/a>licable\u201d? Liberals \u201cincreasingly\u201d view free speech \u201cas an embarrassing anachronism,\u201d with some griping we suffer from too much of it. Yet there\u2019s a big problem with calls to \u201cpolice\u201d speech: \u201cWho will guard the guardians\u201d and what gives men like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg legitimacy? Of course, people can boycott media that suppress speech they want to hear. But that will trigger another problem: \u201cOur experiment in self-government will become even more precarious . . . as we inhabit not just neighborhoods but also cyberspace precincts colored either bright red or deep blue.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Beware the Media Gatekeepers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twitter\u2019s decision \u201cto attempt to shut down the circulation of the New York Post story, which looked bad when it was made, looks even worse\u201d with \u201cmore evidence in view,\u201d observes The New York Times\u2019 Ross Douthat<\/a>. It\u2019s now certain \u201cThe Post\u2019s story was not some sort of sweeping Russian disinformation plot.\u201d And \u201cit\u2019s hard to come up with any reasonable social-media rule that would justify the suppression of The Post\u2019s story that couldn\u2019t just as easily be applied to all the pieces of conspiratorial Trump-Russia reportage that didn\u2019t pan out.\u201d It\u2019s \u201creasonable for conservatives to fear\u201d that \u201csocial-media censorship, carried out \u2018neutrally\u2019 by companies overwhelmingly staffed by liberals, will expand its reach with the vocal support of an \u00adincreasingly consolidated and liberal group of mainstream-media gatekeepers\u201d \u2014 including Douthat\u2019s own newspaper \u2014 that \u201cshape the way\u201d much of the country receives news.<\/p>\n
