Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, along with their daughter Aiko, attended a charity screening of the anime film Kono Sekai no (Sarani Ikutsumono) Katasumi ni / In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World, held at Nisho Hall in Tokyo on December 18.

The family sat side by side with director Sunao Katabuchi and Non, the voice cast of the protagonist character Suzu, in the audience and watched the film that carefully portrayed the lives of Japanese people at the end of the World War II. The donations gathered at the event will be used to fund activities of the Hiroshima branch of the Japan Red Cross Society.

Katabuchi wrote on his official Twitter that he gave figures of the film’s two main characters, Suzu and Harumi, to the empress, “I hoped she would remember Suzu-san and others forever.”

The 150-minute new edition with newly-animated 30-minute footage that reflects the director’s original vision is set to be released in Japan tomorrow, December 20, 2019.
