Daily fantasy sports company DraftKings has stripped Bachelor in Paradise couple Jade and Tanner Tolbert of their $1 million prize after cheating allegations surfaced. Jade was proud of herself for winning the jackpot with the help of her husband, but apparently she should have kept her victory under wraps.
The parents of two were open about conspiring for the million, assuming they wouldn’t be forced to surrender their winnings. On DraftKings, the more fantasy lineups one enters, the better chance a participant has of winning the money. Jade and Tanner went all in on this particular event during the NFL’s wild card weekend, submitting 150 picks each, costing them $3,750 apiece. The rules of DraftKings state that „team-building complementary lineups which serve to work together AND executing a strategy that may create any unfair advantage over individual play,“ but such activity is nearly impossible to monitor. In this case, it was brought to the attention of DraftKings because other players in the tournament recognized Jade’s name in first place and posted it on social media. A representative for the Tolberts told CNN that it wouldn’t have been such a big deal if it wasn’t a woman who won. Many male football fans – especially those entrenched in daily fantasy sports culture – still struggle to comprehend the fact that women, too, can possess a deep knowledge about the sport of football.
Nonetheless, DraftKings didn’t show the Tolberts any mercy in this situation. The site told Us, “DraftKings has decided to update the standings for several contests. All customers affected by the updated standings will be notified directly. It is our general policy not to comment further on such matters.” While it didn’t make an outright statement denouncing the actions of the Tolberts, the message was clear: don’t cheat – but if you must cheat, don’t be a famous couple with hundreds of thousands of social media followers.
The news likely won’t put too much of a damper on the Tolberts‘ everyday life. They seem to be rather well off, with Jade boasting over a million followers on Instagram. And although they have had their share of hiccups, especially when it comes to child birth, neither of them have screwed up so bad that they’re going to lose fans over it.
It can take a long time for someone who does their homework to set one daily fantasy lineup, so it really must have put a dent in the Tolberts‘ week to assemble 300 of them. In the end, it was all for naught. But the couple who celebrated their fourth anniversary this past weekend probably has more important things to look forward to than their next check from DraftKings.
