„Terry Crews Praises America’s Got Talent Gig Amid Union’s Controversial Firing“

He spoke out against the onslaught of negative press on the weekly talent competition show. After former judges Union and Julianne Hough were terminated from their jobs in late 2019, Union detailed the toxic work environment she encountered while employed by the show by meeting with NBC executives. Meanwhile, the negative press and public outcry is still there. Is America’s Got Talent an unsavory workplace, or are Union’s complaints hers and hers alone?

Crews spoke with Us Weekly about his time on AGT. He insisted, „When they talk about diversity, there was every bit of diversity on set, everywhere. I have never been in a more diverse place in 20 years of entertainment, so what can I say?“

The former NFL star and previous host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is no stranger to controversy. Crews was an integral figure during the #MeToo movement when he spoke out against being groped by a male talent agent named Adam Venit. Crews filed a lawsuit and took to the talk show circuit to speak his truth. It was a bold move that could have left him without a career. In the end, there were no charges brought against the agent, and he and Crews settled their lawsuit out of court. Not only that, but Crews was unscathed by the fallout and has been a celebrated host at AGT ever since.

Crews is having a great time on America’s Got Talent, and that’s wonderful for him. However, it’s dangerous to compare and contrast individual experiences. Just because his stint on the show has been roses and daisies, it doesn’t negate the myriad issues outlined in Gabrielle Union’s complaint. It just means that people were allegedly a bit more willing to hold it together in his presence. Also, Crews is a series regular on another NBC show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, so is he really going to rise up with his fist in the air and badmouth his powerful bosses? Of course not. Since many of Union’s complaints centered around gender bias (such as reprimanding her for wearing hairstyles that were „too black“ and giving extensive wardrobe notes to the female judges), Crews might not have been present for that. If he can really say that he’s happy at America’s Got Talent, good for him. However, if there’s even a hint of impropriety that he’s witnessed, he shouldn’t let his own money and job security get in the way of that. Again, we should stop looking so quickly to diminish other people’s struggles. After all, sometimes in a stampede, it’s the one person who gets crushed, not the masses.
