#The Flash Teases Tragic Origin of New Villain PARADOX -BB

Following the events of the Rouges Reign storyline and spinning out of the final confrontation between The Flash and the Turtle during The Flash: Year One, Joshua Willaimson and Howard Porter are set to debut the newest Flash villain, Paradox. Paradox will make his debut as Barry in the penultimate issue before the series returns to its legacy numbering of #750.

Williamson, the creator of new Flash characters such as Godspeed; the conduits of the new Forces such as Bashir/Psyche (Sage Force), Steadfast (Still Force), and Alexa Antigone/Fuerza (Strength Force), is set to introduce his newest character, Paradox. In the official release, DC Comics describes Paradox’s origin as the price ordinary people pay for as a result of the super-powered battles royales. They also described Paradox as someone who, prior to his transformation, led a happy life of family and science, before it turned into a nightmare as the result of The Turtle’s attack on Central City.

Joshua Williamson said the new villain had been planned for a while now: „Howard Porter and I created and planted the seeds of Flash’s new deadly and powerful villain way back in The Flash Annual #2 in 2018. “Now, Paradox wants revenge on the Flash legacy! Howard killed it in this Paradox origin issue in The Flash #88!

Along with the premise of Flash #88, DC also released seven pages of artwork by Howard Porter. The most interesting of the released pages is the one that shows the man who will become Paradox in some sort of lab which appears to be his office. The different posters in the room suggest that before his transformation, Paradox was interested in the various superheroes of the DCU as the posters on display allude to the various members of the Justice League such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Green Lantern.  There are two posters that seem to be out of place in the room, the first being a map of the DC Multiverse and the yellow smiley face button pinned next to it. The second one is the poster that looks like the atom symbol found on Doctor Manhattan’s forehead. For the most part, it looks like there are just various pieces of gadgetry, however, the most interesting and easily identifiable artifact in the lab is what looks to be the Cosmic Staff, the weapon used by Jack Knight and Stargirl, dismantled for study. Whether these easter eggs are clues to Paradox’s origin or just nods to the fans will hopefully be revealed over the course of the story.

The other released pages of artwork also allude to Paradox’s origin, specifically where he was during The Flash and Turtle’s final fight, how his family responded to his new form, the powers that he possesses, and what he has in store to show the Flash.  It stands to reason that if Williamson says that the seeds for Paradox’s arrival were laid in The Flash Annual #2 in 2018 and Godspeed is scheduled to appear in the coming issues, then it was likely Paradox who recruited Godspeed to steal the samples of the Speed Force from the members of the Flash family – before Impulse showed up and saved them, before leaving to reunite with his former team over in the pages of Young Justice.

The Flash #88 hits the stand on February 12th, 2020.
