„Legends of Tomorrow: Who Is Beebo (& Why Fans Love Him)“

Fans love Beebo, but here’s who DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s blue fur ball is and why he’s so popular. The Arrowverse has just weathered Crisis On Infinite Earths, which destroyed the parallel universes until Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) AKA the Spectre defeated the Anti-Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) at the dawn of time and re-birthed the Multiverse. One major result was Earth Prime, which places Supergirl and Black Lightning on the same world as The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow. Thankfully, Beebo also survived the transition, because the Arrowverse wouldn’t be the same without him.

Beebo debuted in the Legends of Tomorrow season 3 episode „Beebo the God of War,“ and the fuzzy stuffed animal immediately became the perfect symbol of Legends of Tomorrow embracing its inherent weirdness to become what many fans feel is the best Arrowverse show. In „Beebo the God of War,“ Earth-1 in 1992 was gripped by „Cuddle Me Beebo“ frenzy (similar to the „Tickle Me Elmo“ craze in the real world). A young Dr. Martin Stein (Graeme McComb) acquired the last Beebo in a toy store, only to be banished to 1000 A.D., where the Vikings in Vinland believed the talking stuffed animal was magical. The Vikings made Beebo their Blue God of War, which completely altered the future until the Legends set things right. But, for a time, Beebo Day replaced Christmas, and he was the most powerful deity in history, since the Vikings completely misunderstood Beebo’s canned dialogue and took it all as gospel.

As the series dove headlong into full-fledged wackiness, Legends of Tomorrow’s writers knew they struck upon a pot of blue gold with Beebo because the fuzzball returned to play an integral part in how the Legends saved the world from the demon Mallus in the season 3 finale. At the crucial moment, Nate Heywood (Nick Zano) had to think of „something pure“ for the Legends to magically combine into so they could face Mallus and he, of course, imagined a gigantic „Voltron Beebo.“ So, the Legends joined their powers via the elemental Totems of Zambezi and, as the titanic (but still cuddly) Beebo, they fought and defeated Mallus using pro-wrestling moves and kung fu from The Matrix. Beebo vs. Mallus remains the benchmark for how utterly insane, yet incredibly entertaining Legends of Tomorrow became, and it’s easily one of the most unforgettable moments in Arrowverse history.

Perhaps realizing that the giant kaiju-fighting Beebo was going to be hard to top, Legends of Tomorrow season 4 kept Beebo on the peripheral, but the blue furry friend’s popularity took off and he appeared in the other Arrowverse series. Curtis Holt (Echo Kellum) gave Zoe Ramirez (Eliza Faria) a Beebo doll as a get-well present in Arrow season 7 and Beebo also appeared in The Flash season 4 by way of a plot by the Trickster (Devon Graye). Meanwhile, Beebo’s brand and merchandise became ubiquitous and the lovable creature branched out into video games like Beebo Blox and even Agent Gary Green’s (Adam Tsekhman) socks.

But it was during Crisis On Infinite Earths that Beebo made his triumphant return, which fittingly took place in Legends of Tomorrow’s Crisis Part 5. As Sargon the Sorcerer (Raúl Herrera) robbed a Star City bank, the illusionist distracted the superheroes with another gigantic Beebo on an adorable rampage – but Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) didn’t miss his chance to get a selfie with Beebo. Finally, Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) took Sargon out with a punch while reminding him that „Beebo is off limits!“ After all, it’s only natural that the Legends have grown fiercely protective of Beebo and what he represents.

Meanwhile, fans have also embraced Beebo’s message of love and cuddles, which symbolizes the underlying message of family and friendship at the heart of Legends of Tomorrow and the Arrowverse at large. And though not every fan has fallen in love with Beebo, his popularity (and cuteness) is nevertheless undeniable, and Beebo is as beloved in the Arrowverse as Baby Yoda is in the real world.

As evidenced by the trailer for Legends of Tomorrow season 5, the misfits of the Arrowverse are going to get even weirder as they chase history’s greatest villains across time, but Beebo will make his presence felt: Mona Wu (Ramona Young) is seen provocatively posing in a bed full of Beebos and Ryan Reynolds will star in the Detective Beebo live-action film. So, not only does Beebo always need hugs, but our blue furry friend is thankfully here to stay – and Legends of Tomorrow is all the better for it.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow airs Tuesdays at 9pm on The CW.
