WandaVision: 5 Things About The Spin-Off We Can't Wait For (& 5 We're Scared About)

The production of a series centered on MCU characters Wanda Maximoff and Vision was confirmed last year. Since then, as Marvel has released details about the series, like the setting and the cast, anticipation for WandaVision has only grown. Now that its premiere date has been moved up to 2020, the prospect of the long-awaited show has fans even more excited.

On the other hand, there is reason for some worry. Following Avengers: Endgame and the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, not to mention being one of the premiere Phase 4 productions, is undoubtedly a daunting task. Only time will tell whether WandaVision is up to it.

With this in mind, here are the things we are looking forward to and those we are scared about.

10 Scared About: It’s An Experimental Endeavor

There’s no question that Marvel Studios has produced the most successful franchise in cinematic history, so when the frequent franchise producer and studio president Kevin Feige says that WandaVisionwill be unlike anything we’ve done before,“ he provokes as much worry as he does excitement.

It’s clear Marvel can’t tell the same stories over again, but why tinker with the proven recipe for success? Film and television are creative endeavors first and foremost, but especially considering their plans to weave the show tightly into the films, it’s understandably nerve-racking to wonder if the newer stories will put the studio’s achievements and the receptions of their productions at risk.

9 Can’t Wait: Seeing The Title Characters

There’s no doubt that its incorporation of the Avengers‘ Wanda and Vision is the main reason behind the anticipation of this series. The show will bring back Vision, who was killed in Avengers: Infinity War, and it’s safe to say we’re excited to see how he returns and to learn more about his character. Perhaps even more exciting, though, is seeing Wanda back in action and living up to her comic book counterpart’s identity of Scarlet Witch.

The two characters, though both important to the way the story played out, had roles that felt smaller than that of most other Avengers in the Infinity Saga, so we’re excited to see WandaVision put them in the spotlight.

8 Scared About: Disney+ As A Platform

Described as part sitcom, part Marvel movie, WandaVision joins several other MCU shows that will premiere on Disney+, all of which will sport a whole new structure. While not the first Marvel series to be produced, WandaVision is one of the first to make its home on Disney+, the company’s streaming service that debuted last November. Marvel’s less than successful Netflix shows may set a precedent; on the other hand, the experience may have been the teachable moment needed to make works like WandaVision a success.

Other Disney+ shows, like The Mandalorian, for instance, have already done very well on the platform, but will that reflect on these upcoming Marvel series? Will the shows bring the same action and adventure to the franchise as the films? Will the characters we know and love maintain be given the opportunity to spread their wings as leading heroes?

7 Can’t Wait: Seeing The Supporting Characters

Wanda and Vision aren’t the only characters we’re looking forward to catching up with. Marvel has confirmed that Monica Rambeau, introduced to the universe as the daughter of Carol’s best friend and fellow Air Force pilot in Captain Marvel, will be portrayed in the series by Teyonah Parris, best known for her appearance in the Academy Award-nominated If Beale Street Could Talk.

Kat Dennings will be reprising her role as Thor’s Darcy Lewis, while Randall Park’s FBI Agent Jimmy Woo from Ant-Man and the Wasp will also be returning. Bringing together characters from 4 different MCU storylines is sure to be entertaining.

6 Scared About: Limited Length

Marvel’s new platform brings with it a new structure. WandaVision will be 6 episodes long, each being released a week apart, and will reportedly span 6 hours of total screen time. This time frame is sure to keep things short and sweet, but to what extent?

Will an estimated 60 minutes each week for 6 weeks be enough to bring together every corner of the MCU the show touches, establish the Scarlet Witch’s role, set up her re-entry to the universe, and fulfill all the other promises that have been made? We’re confident Marvel can pull it off, but it’s sure to be a nail-biting endeavor, nonetheless.

5 Can’t Wait: Contribution To The Universe

As one of the premiere productions of Phase 4 of the MCU, WandaVision, along with the other up-and-coming Marvel shows, will not only connect to the films but provide information necessary to understand the overarching story.

Specifically, WandaVision will lead into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As Wanda had been expected to be one of the central Avengers in the future MCU works since before WandaVision was even a rumor, we’re fairly confident that the series will give rise to a more prominent role for the Scarlet Witch.

4 Scared About: The New Setting

Not only is WandaVision finding its place on a new streaming platform, but the characters will also find themselves in a time never before seen in the MCU: the 1950s. How they get there has not yet been revealed, but it’s not so much the how that makes us nervous as it is the who. The MCU has taken us to the ’40s with Captain America: The First Avenger, but that was 9 years ago. The supporting cast was, shall we say, less colorful than WandaVision’s is expected to be.

A more diverse lineup is a huge step forward for television, and while this show does not appear to be about race, there are at least two people of color, Monica Rambeau and Jimmy Woo, who will appear. It was less trying to be non-white in the more modern settings where these characters had made their debut, but in the 1950s, the subject will be almost unavoidable. It begs the question of how Marvel will acknowledge the experiences of people of color in history, if at all.

3 Can’t Wait: The 1950s Setting

Indeed, one of the things that has us on edge is also what we’re most excited about. After all, we get to see Marvel’s universe at a time we have never seen it before (although, there is some speculation that the 1950s setting could be induced by Wanda’s reality-bending powers, so what we see in WandaVision could be unlike the universe we know at all).

Whatever be the case, Andy Park’s totally ’50s WandaVision poster revealed at the D23 Expo last year reveals a classic couple with costumes characteristic of the time period… with some hints to their witch and android alter egos.

2 Scared About: Their Romance

Marvel has a long history of empowering female characters, but Wanda wouldn’t be the first to have her worth attached to a relationship with a man. Only the second woman to have a place on the Avengers team, her romance with Vision starts developing in Captain America: Civil War and has become a full-fledged love affair by Infinity War.

The Scarlet Witch has clearly been a powerful ally to the Avengers in her own right. However, would a series centered on the couple do her the same justice while maintaining the one of the most well-received romances in the MCU?

1 Can’t Wait: A Diverse Production Team

Jac Schaeffer, who was a contributing writer for Captain Marvel and who wrote the screenplay for Black Widow, was named showrunner of WandaVision. Over the years we have been following her, Schaeffer has expressed her strong beliefs about the importance of diverse writers‘ rooms, that having perspectives of women and people of color create better stories, which definitely eases our concerns about the 1950s setting.

According to Schaeffer, 4 of the 8 writers she has hired for WandaVision are women, and the majority of the show’s overall production team is female. Seeing this kind of team working on a show like WandaVision makes us not only excited for the series but confident that Marvel is keeping up with the times‘ changing demands and what several big-name films have already embraced: diversity, both behind and in front of the camera, leads to better production.
