„Pretty Little Liars: 10 Reasons Why Alison & Hanna Aren’t Real Friends“

Pretty Little Liars is one of the few shows out there with an entire main cast composed of female characters. As such, we get to experience a lot of complicated and interesting friendships between women. One of the central relationships on the series is that between Alison Dilaurentis and Hanna Marin. But are they really friends?

Alison manipulated Hanna, encouraged her eating disorder and many other terrible things. In return, Hanna never knew the real Alison, at least not for many years after she returned into their lives. The following list details some of the reasons Hanna and Alison may never have been real friends after all.

10 Alison Mocked Hanna For Her Weight And Appearance

How can you be real friends with someone who dubbed you „Hefty Hanna?“ That’s what Alison called Hanna, to her face and behind her back. She had no problem belittling Hanna and making her feel insecure.

Alison picked out insecurities in her friends so she could exert control over them, and it was never more noticeable than in how she treated Hanna over the years. She made her feel fat and ugly, regardless of her actual appearance. Is that the work of a friend?

9 Alison Encouraged Hanna To Have An Eating Disorder

As if it wasn’t bad enough that Alison frequently mocked Hanna and made her feel inferior, she openly encouraged Hanna to have an eating disorder. She would tell Hanna not to eat and tell her it was „for her own good.“

She pretended to do it under the guise of „caring“ for Hanna, but in reality, she just wanted to control her even more. Even worse, in another flashback, it’s shown that at one point Alison even offered to help Hanna take care of binging episodes. She doesn’t explicitly say it, but Alison strongly implies she will teach Hanna how to purge after she binge eats.

8 Hanna Idolized Alison Too Much

They always say it’s a tricky line to walk when you start to get close to someone you idolize. That was certainly true with Hanna and Alison. For much of Hanna’s youth, she tried to mold herself into an Alison clone. She mimicked her looks, her habits, and even her attitude.

She wanted what Alison had in terms of confidence and popularity. As such, it made Hanna extra bitter toward Alison when she realized she spent so much time trying to be someone else instead of finding her own identity.

7 Hanna Never Stood Up To Alison

Hanna has always been haunted by her lack of ability to stand up to Alison when they were younger. Not only did she never defend herself when Alison mocked and belittled her, but she would sit by and do nothing when Alison would make fun of other people like Lucas and Mona.

In a way, Hanna would become as cruel as Alison as she sat back and let things happen without trying to stop them. She was Alison’s minion, and there wasn’t any parity or mutual respect between them.

6 Hanna Once Called Alison Her Worst Enemy

During one of her therapy sessions, Hanna called Alison her worst enemy. She told Dr. Sullivan all of her real feelings about the former Queen Bee and what she had to say wasn’t exactly the words of someone talking about her best friend.

Instead, Hanna discussed how Alison made her feel terrible all the time and constantly belittled her, made her feel weak, and more. Hanna said she would no longer give Alison the power of her life and tried to remove the false best friend from her thoughts and life.

5 Alison Constantly Lied To Hanna

Remember the flashback that showed Hanna and Alison at a salon one day with Alison sporting her new Vivian Darkbloom look? She had a chance at that point to tell Hanna the truth about her alias, or at least give her more of a hint about what was going on.

Instead, she just said she was trying to be someone else and suggested Hanna try doing the same. Alison hid everything from Hanna, and the rest of her friends, for that matter.

4 Alison Came Between Hanna And Mona

Mona and Hanna didn’t really become friends until after Alison was out of the picture. Before that, Hanna never stood up to Alison when she constantly bullied Mona. But when Alison came back into the picture, the grudge between Alison and Mona was far from over.

Hanna was constantly forced into the middle of their conflict.

3 Alison Belittled Hanna Over Her Hookup With Mike

Hanna and Mike’s brief hookup may not have been the best idea, considering Hanna was older than him and he was her best friend, Aria’s, brother. But still, when Alison found the two of them together, she wasn’t as understanding about the entire thing as she could have been.

She made fun of Hanna for being a „cradle robber.“ Alison made it seem like Hanna had nothing to offer Mike or anyone. It would have been nice for her take that opportunity to build Hanna up rather than using it to tear her down.

2 Alison Had Noel Break Into Hanna’s House

Can you really consider someone your friend when they devise a plan to terrorize you and your mother? In the 5th season of the show, Alison gets Noel to break into Hanna’s home with a knife to terrify Hanna’s mom, Ashley, so she would be less likely to question Alison’s story.

Alison working with Noel at all is a complication considering everything he’d done to the liars before that point, and afterward, too.

1 Hanna Wanted Alison To Leave Town

After Alison finally returns to Rosewood, there comes a point where Hanna helps Alison escape town since she is still trying to hide from A. She keeps it a secret from her friends, even Emily, but eventually confesses to Caleb that part of her just wanted Alison gone.

This proves that part of Hanna had never forgiven Alison for everything that happened when they were younger. That kind of grudge can ruin any friendship.
