#What Sex Education Season 2's [SPOILER] Means For Otis & Maeve -BB

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sex Education.

Sex Education season 2 ended with another cliffhanger regarding the possible romantic relationship between Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey), as Isaac (George Robinson) deleted a message of love from the former to the latter. Unlike Sex Education season 1’s ending first kept the would-be lovers apart, which was purely chalked to bad timing, things are a bit trickier this time with Isaac in the mix.

After successfully running an underground sex therapy business in season 1, Otis and Maeve’s dynamic progressed throughout Sex Education’s first eight episodes. However, as with high school romances, things didn’t go according to plan. In such a cliched case of bad timing, by the time Maeve decided to profess her real feelings for Otis, he just got officially together with Ola (Patricia Allison).

Netflix’s Sex Education season 2 continued to play on this will-they/won’t-they dynamic, although not as blatantly as in season 1. The latest outing mostly kept Otis and Maeve apart. Otis was busy sorting out his relationship with Ola and the fact that his mom is dating his girlfriend’s dad. Maeve, on the other hand, dealt with maternal problems as she’s reunited with her recovering addict mother. Despite their individual lives pulling them apart, it’s clear that both still have mutual feelings for each other. Maeve came clean about her real feelings for Otis, prompting for Otis to do the same. Still, the circumstances didn’t permit them to act on their attraction. After a few more snafus, season 2 ended with Otis seeking out Maeve – telling her that her loves her through a voice message.

Just when it seemed like everything is finally falling into place for Otis and Maeve, the situation gets so much messed up with Isaac’s meddling. Maeve’s new caravan neighbor, Isaac is a disabled boy who has a penchant for causing minor ruckus. He was kicked out of an orphanage with his brother, leading them to the same campsite as Maeve. Despite his playfulness, Isaac seems to be a good person. He quickly became friendly with Maeve after he dragged her to a dance class that he and his brother run. It was clear that Isaac had genuine concern for Maeve, after all, he was the one who tipped her about Erin (Anne-Marie Duff) not really going to work (although that kind of backfired). And while he’s not the type to give Maeve pep talks and be emotionally supportive, the fact of the matter is, he’s a friend to her.

Isaac’s genuine concern for Maeve prompted him to get in the way of her and Otis‘ potential relationship. In the last few moments of Sex Education season 2, Otis goes to visit Maeve in the hopes of   finally getting together in light of the voice message he sent her. Unfortunately, he’d just missed her, and instead of waiting for her return, he asked Isaac to tell Maeve that he passed by. He also emphasized on checking her voice messages. Isaac assured him that he’ll do just that, but in the ultimate act of betrayal, he went behind Maeve’s back, checked her phone for the voicemail, and unceremoniously deleted it before she got the chance to hear the message of love herself.

What Sex Education season 2 failed to clarify is if Isaac’s urge to protect Maeve stems from a platonic or romantic love – perhaps it’s something that will be fully explored in Sex Education season 3. Regardless of what it is for now, it makes sense that Isaac isn’t thrilled at the prospect of Otis creeping back into Maeve’s life. She has just lost her mother and baby sister, and is obviously still a bit guilty about ratting Erin out; he doesn’t want her to feel worse than she already does and she’s afraid that Otis would end up only hurting her. It also didn’t help that the only other time that Isaac had an interaction with Otis was during his disastrous party where he made that scathing drunk speech. So, while Otis is typically a good guy, Isaac only knows him at his worst. No wonder, he doesn’t want Maeve with him.

Ironically, the way season 2 wrapped up is somehow reminiscent of the events of season 1 finale – however, instead of Maeve left pining for Otis, things are reversed and Otis is left out in the cold. Like its predecessor, the game-changing last moments of Sex Education season 2 effectively sets up its follow-up, albeit we can expect a much more convoluted season 3 when it comes to Otis and Maeve’s relationship with the involvement of Isaac. Depending on where the next chapter of the show picks up, the Netflix original can continue to draw out this this will-they/won’t-they dynamic between the pair. Considering that this romantic trope has time and again proved to be effective as seen with Cheers‚ Sam and Diane, and of course, Friends‚ Ross and Rachel, the series can stretch out the narrative in the hopes that viewers will be more invested to their story. That said, the longer they hold out on making the pair official, the higher the expectation is for the pay-off.

Whether or not the stars finally align for Otis and Maeve in season 3 remains to be a big question. It’s tied up to the consequences of Isaac’s deception. No matter how well-intentioned, what Isaac did was wrong and should be reprimanded. If anything, deleting the message only put him at a disadvantage in the event that he wants to pursue Maeve. Once his ruse is discovered, Maeve’s perception of him will be tainted, likely resulting in their friendship ending. He wasn’t even sure that she’d forgive Otis, so there’s really no pressing need to go to the lengths that he did to keep them apart. Given that both Otis and Maeve attend the same school, it’s very easy for them to bump into each other. And with Otis expectedly waiting for Maeve’s response for his love declaration, the matter about the lost voice message could be easily brought up. Regardless of the specifics, what’s clear is the the fallout of Isaac’s scheme will be a focal point of Sex Education season 3.

Netflix has yet to officially order a third year for Sex Education. However, if its viewing numbers are as impressive as they were during its debut outing (where it was one of Netflix’s most popular shows of 2019), chances are that it’s only a matter of time before an announcement is made. The show’s creatives are obviously looking at another year considering the number of unresolved plot lines the show has to address for a satisfying conclusion.
