Ikehata Hiroshi (Witch Watch, Dark Gathering) is directing the anime series, with Kazuho Hyodo (365 Days to the Wedding, Tonikawa: Over the Moon for You) as series composer and Narihito Sekikawa (If My Wife Became an Elementary School Student) as character designer. CUE is handling the animation production.
The anime is based on Tetsuhiro Koshita‘s dodgeball-themed manga series, which began serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Corocoro Comic website on November 28, 2022. Six tankobon volumes have been released in Japan as of August 2025.
The 2022 manga series is a Reiwa-set sequel to Koshita’s Hono no Tokyuji Dodge Danpei manga, which ran in CoroCoro Comic magazine in 1989 and ended in 1995. It inspired its own TV anime adaptation between 1991 and 1992, as well as several video games.

Hono no Tokyujo: Dodge Danko centers on a young girl named Danko Ichigeki — the daughter of the first series’ protagonist Danpei Ichigeki.
